...was on locally last week, as martinrowe reminded me, and I couldn't go..so this isn't really a review at all! Here are a couple of Youtube vids I discovered this morning that were taken at the concert, where local hot-shot guitarist Darren Hodge was duetting - Very impressive of course, but two things struck me - i) Darren's dreadful amplified tone, esp on flatpicked runs. Clive's pretty good plugged in tone whatever he's playing ii) Clive's far greater sensitivity to dynamics and musicality - esp he knows when to ease off on his accomp volume to let Darren's lead parts sit up front. No doubt that Darren would knock spots off most of us, but playing with Clive does show up some large gaps - I'm sure Darren will continue to grow as a player, esp when blokes like Clive (and TE) are generous enough to jam with them in live situations. Wish I'd been able to attend! Did you get there in the end Martin? Keith

I'm sure it would have been terrific fun to watch, but I completely agree with you about musicality Keith. Clive can play fast of course, as he demonstrates here, but in the pursuit of speed Darren definitely lost his way a bit on Cannonball Rag. The last couple of times I saw Clive in concert he played a tune called "In The Deep" from his latest CD. It would be hard to imagine a slower piece, but the tone he managed to pull out of the guitar was quite extraordinary. It was an absolute masterclass in musicianship.

I agree with you both here. Clive is my favourite guitar player currently. He can play anything. He has the gift of musicality and another thing that must come naturally to Clive in his playing - gentle, subtle humour. He always puts a smile on my face. Watch this: Phil ps He is a guitar god to me

I agree that Clive is probably the pick of the bunch at the moment. His live sound is very good and her uses some very dramatic settings - I seem to remember he takes out all of the mids! There is an interview on this somewhere on the web.
