Do my eyes deceive me? Something with an "i" in the name that doesn't need an apple device to work it? Do my ears deceive me? The acoustic sounds are pleasingly rather natural sounding? iRig Acoustic StageNot very expensive given the preamp and the inclusion of Instrument Calibration. Easily switch-able between instruments. Frees up the player to be able to move around. Probably too good to be true! What drawbacks / problems am I not spotting? Mark

Cheap contact mic? too close to the sound hole.
When ever you see the words "acoustic tone comes alive with vibrance, warmth, depth and earthy, woody tone" — run for the hills.
They do suggest blending this with an ordinary pickup which seems a bit odd given the claims (but reasonable giving reality).
However, there are plenty of people on that other forum who seem happy with it!

I was expecting so little when I went onto the site! As you say, with that sort of mic and set up I was expecting to be unimpressed. I'm getting more than the usual level of tinnitus at the moment so that's maybe messing up what I'm hearing. Or maybe my expectations were just so low that a little sounded a lot? It just seemed to sound much better than I expected. I'll maybe try again tomorrow - see if I can hear it properly! Mark

It looks worth a try. It's not expensive, and it all comes down to the electronic gubbins which might be decent. Is it an acceptable artificial sound? Because most pickups aren't. If it is, and the feedback control works, it's a winner for the price. No fitting! Nigel www.nkforsterguitars.com

Does anybody have one (or even just the iRig acoustic mic itself)? I was hoping to use it live more than for recording, but am mostly concerned that the cable seems very flimsy and wouldn't stand up to much wear and tear (that's what the Amazon reviews say, anyway, but then what do they know? - plus I haven't read anywhere that someone's cable has actually broken, just that it gives the impression it will). It also seems that having the cable draping out the bottom to the DSP unit on your belt or guitar strap is going to be real pfaff (and end in tears when I get tangled up, trip over, rip the lead out, snap the neck off my guitar and impale someone in the front row on the splintered pieces). I know it's unreasonable to expect it to be a substitute for fitting a proper system (like a Baggs Anthem), but the portability between instruments as well as the much lower price is very attractive and the sound samples in the advertising sound very nice. The chance to use it to supplement your onboard pickup and mix the two signals together seems very appealing. Harmony Central seems to say nice things about it, too. I never like ordering something sight unseen but there are no stockists anywhere near little old Dorset, so I'm considering taking a punt on it! But the last things two things I considered buying with the intention of improving live sound were the TC Electronic Bodyrez and the Boss AD-2 pedals, but I got a chance to try both of those after being wowed by the advertising blurb and hated both of them!

For what it's worth Alun Lower gives it a really positive review in the current issue of Acoustic Magazine.
"... beautifully simple and simply beautiful sounding ..."
The wording of the article does seem to suggest it was only tested on one guitar though.
As with any single isolated guitar review it has limited value to making a judgement call of course.

I looked at these, as my guitar jack socket needs repairing, and thought this would be a good stop gap solution for recording myself. The user reviews do seem to point out that the mic picks up a lot more of the finger/fret noise than an internal mic though, and this put me off a bit.

I've been using an AKG c411 contact mic live recently and it seems like a good compromise between the practicality & tone questions of live sound. Better sound than a UST but still not as hazard ridden as micing up on stage. They go for a fair bit less than the iRig so it may be worth checking one out if you're considering going the contact mic route.

Ok have decided to go for it so have ordered one. I'll do a review and let you know how I get on!
Read the Acoustic review now too, which is very encouraging but a bit overly positive to be entirely believable. Also seems a bit slapdash not even to have tried it with a nylon string, for which half its presets are intended, or for recording which is another of its intended uses.
Still we"'ll see!
