Yesterday, in Manchester at Chris' Do, a few of us picked up the CD's we had ordered from our own Phil Taylor — Phil Taylor. I've been listening to it this morning and it is a lovely CD. Phil plays a series of lovely melodies in a range of open tunings on three guitars, a Martin 000 and two Brooks guitars - a Torridge and Phil's custom Lyn. Some of the open tunings are extended by the use of partial capos (something I've never really experimented with). These are very lyrical tunes, well executed with a lovely, deft, touch. Once again I am reminded that the secret to great music is not dazzling technique but a real feel for a tune and a real touch that leaves proper space in the tune.
One the joys of my life is when the good woman is away overnight. I can drop off to sleep with a queue of guitar music playing over the Sonos system in the bedroom. John Rebourn, Clive Carroll, Tony McManus and more are there. But I shall be certainly adding Phil's work to the list. To add to the achievement of composing and playing these tunes we have to also recognise the achievement in recording these tunes at home. Home recording can be a real pain in the bum — a fair amount of yesterday's event as spent talking about this. These are lovely and clean recordings. Phil sent the CD to a proper catering engineer who — I think — used some roper old analogue kit for eq, reverb and stuff. It shows. This is a fine end product. So, hats off to Phil. I'm enjoying listening to this more than offerings from many so called superstars of the acoustic world. If you message Phil here he'll send you one!

+1 to that Andy - having commented on another thread I'll not eulogise further here other than to repeat that Phil's compostional skill, musicality, touch and tone are the equal of many pro players, and actually surpass that of a fair few of them.
I can add another +1 from Mrs O'C, who is not at all easily impressed - Phil's music provided the sonic background to a lovely w/e away in Cornwall - she not only didn't ask me to turn the CD off (her normal reaction to guitar music, especially mine)but was heard to utter the immortal words, "That's rather nice. Who is that? He's a bit good isn't he." Believe me, there can be no higher praise....
