I've been on the lookout for a Gibson-a-like for some sub nashville singer songwriter standard tuning stuff. Couldn't quite run to a J45, tempting though it might be, so have been keeping an eye on the local ads. So I saw an Lg-0 shaped instrument claiming to be 1960s for 20 quid with a few issues, but thought it might be worth a punt and I'm itching for a project. So here it is: I reckon it is late 1960s at the dawn of the "lawsuit" era. There's plenty that's bad about it - lots of stickers, cheap and knackered tuners, but the neck is straight, the (ply)wood seems decent and it has loads of character. The binding is pretty much gone on the back (rebound with insulating tape so there's a lot of sticky to remove...) Wish me luck. Hoepfuly there's a characterful vintage japanese guitar under there. Oh yes, and the guy threw in another 1960s guitar - a Hijos de Vicente Tatay classical (another....now have four of these, all needing neck angle attention.) Lots of fun to come...

Looks like you'll not be getting out much for a month or so, Gav! Back to the market for some Old Spice, eh?

At least the scratch-plate seems to be securely fixed!

It seems to be a fairly convincing copy of the LG-0 including that awful screw on scratch plate. Faithful to the gibbo original. Ladder braced.

stickers cleaned off and it's starting to look something like. a few unpleasant surprises, some expected others not so. So, definitely laminate back and sides, evidenced by the binding channel. Half the back binding is missing, and I'll have to replace with something. Shoudl be fairly straightforward. The bad news was at the heel when I removed stickers there there was a bloody great hole where you'd expect a strap button, and a big woodscrew into the neckblock. There's a bit of daylight between the heel and body and someone has obviously tried to hold this down by primitive means. I got as far as sticking a set of better tuners on last night, and putting a string on to check geometry. It's all a bit high of action, and is going to need much more work. I have a few options - sensible but least fun, try and take the neck off and reset, I could use the current excavation in the heel to install a bolt at the same time to try and pull it all back. The other lazy but possible option - use the perfect slide nut I have and accept that this fifty year old box might be great for slide only.
