For anyone who has ever thought about making their own acoustic guitar or any other stringed instrument, please check out the Lagan Lutherie School. The school is under the tutelage of Sam Irwin who has over 40 years’ experience making all sorts of stringed instruments. I attended the school regularly between 2011 and 2014 and have been back recently to use some of their machines to build jigs and stuff and it’s great to see how the school has grown over the years. I really can’t speak highly enough about the place. When I started with the school we were in a small room at the back of a house in Belfast but the school is now located upstairs in the Avalon Guitar workshop in Newtownards, Co. Down. At present, there are full-time students from the USA, Chile and South Korea as well as a number of part-time students from the UK and the local students who try and get in whenever they can. Men and women of all ages, at all levels of woodworking ability making instruments at their own pace under expert guidance. Downstairs you have some world class luthiers. Ernie McMillan and Balazs Prohaszka to name a few (check out Balazs’ new website). Also, Stevie Graham who has finished 1000’s of Irish guitars and also lacquers my guitars and has been a massive help to me recently. Hopefully, this post might be helpful to those who are interested in exploring lutherie further. If anyone would like to know more about the school please email them directly or feel free to ask me any questions. Cheers,
Donal Lagan Lutherie School
