Interesting, Both the iRig and the AKG have a decent enough sound that you should be able to get e decent sound out of a mixer. The AKG has a little more top end which is probably better for taking down a bit rather than boosting the iRig.
The condenser is more dynamic as you would expect but it didn't sound in a completely different ball park.
A credible sound from the iRig.

BTW, I gave up barre chords a long time ago. Isn't that the point of ope tunings? :-)

Thanks for the sound samples. Useful to hear these. Again the iRig doesn't sound too far off the mark - not a long way from the condenser mic sound. It will also be interesting at some point to hear if you find any difference if you decide to calibrate the iRig. Mark

Sounds v promising, Pete! Thanks for doing those recordings.
I'd be interested to hear how you get on if you try it in live performance.

I'll be testing it at my open mic night tomorrow & then if that goes well, trying it out on some gigs, so I'll report back.
I was actually pretty disappointed with the condenser mic sound & were I attempting a serious recording I'd be mucking about with placement & trying different rooms until I could get a bit more 'wood' & a bit less 'string'. I suspect the f-holes are the reason the standard neck join placement doesn't work as well compared to a flat top & that recording doesn't really do the guitar justice.
I've been using the AKG for a while & haven't been completely satisfied with it - the results can vary wildly depending on the PA you plug it into & the sticky stuff is not especially kind to the finish on the L50 (it's fine on newer, less delicate finishes), so it'll be interesting to see if the iRig fits the bill a bit better.

Willy Porter on iRig Acoustic Stage
An interesting demo with some good sounds from several nice guitars and incorporating baritone and Nashville tuning.

How did the open mic go, PistolPete? The irig sounded much more natural to me than the AKG in your recordings.

From where I was sitting I could hear a lot of scratch & the crowded & noisy nature of the pub mean't I didn't get a chance for a proper listen from out front during soundcheck. I have a gig in Derby tonight, so I'll try it again through my PA & that should give me a better idea of its usefulness.

Well .... you will get some sound samples recording wise from me too! But it'll be a while, despite the gear having arrived. Shed roof repairs, and an unfortunate meeting of pliers and right hand finger tips has left finger-style guitar playing pretty well impossible. Mark

Sorry to hear of the indisposition, Mark; but mending a shed is at least a good cause.

Willy Porter on iRig Acoustic Stage An interesting demo with some good sounds from several nice guitars and incorporating baritone and Nashville tuning. Mark I enjoyed that demo. That system sounds very promising doesn't it, just like a condenser microphone. Not heard of that player either, what a cool dude. A master of cool riffs obviously. I think what I enjoyed most though was the sound of that Nashville strung guitar Robbie

I got on much better at my gig on Saturday. I still haven't got round to putting my Gibson in standard tuning to calibrate the iRig, but it was sounding great on the uncalibrated warm setting.
There was still a lot of scratch coming through, which is one of the reasons I swapped to the 'warm' from 'natural' setting two songs in, but being better able to hear the guitar I was able to be more disciplined about muting behind the slide to control it. My ears tell me it's because there's a lot more in the very high frequency range than I'm used to with other pickups. Basically it's like having the presence control cranked on an amp - but it's one of the things that gives the sound 'air' & makes it seem more natural than the AKG.

Fingers not back to normal yet so I can't do proper testing of my iRig Acoustic Stage ("iRAS") yet. But I did do a couple of short sample tracks of 4 guitars compared, all at the un-calibrated and natural setting. I reckon the iRAS mic / pre amp does make a pretty good distinction between the different instruments in this test. Both sets of samples have about 25 to 30 seconds of each guitar in turn. Guild Jumbo Junior (Spruce/Maple) first, then Giltrap GG (Cedar/mahogany), then TW73 Parlour (Cedar/mahogany), then TW133 Parlour (all 'Hog) app.box.com/s/17xyvv2tu4jnu9rmkh7idupe8jqhbxpk app.box.com/s/iwflgo231zs8dkg56s211vmai340rimjI also flung in a couple of other steel string instruments. A Mandolin and a Seagull Merlin. app.box.com/s/7onsri4p26y740u72pvjrdhj8vga9f6eIt can be a bit of a squeeze between strings and sound-hole on the smaller instruments to slide the mic attachment to grip the sound-hole, but gentle pulling back of the top string gave enough of a gap for it not to be a problem. The TW73 has a thickness of the soundboard just around the sound-hole that means the mic attachment is almost too narrow to clip on to the guitar, but all the other instruments were fine for fit. So I've had a go with it live now too, and got on very well. A solo 30-minute slot at my local folk club, so no jumping around, and playing very quietly using my little Yamaha THR5A to lift the volume a bit beyond normal unamped level. I blended 50/50 with the Irig and the onboard Baggs Element UST, and for me this is where the main usefulness of the Irig will lie, I think, in being able to add in that bit of air to complement an onboard pickup sound rather than replace it completely. It certainly allowed me to try out some more percussive tunes live that I'd previously avoided because the onboard pick-up alone didn't catch the body sounds properly, and these worked really nicely. As PistolPete says, you get a lot more top end, especially with the "natural" setting, and that can need some taming if it's not to sound a bit harsh. One thing I've noticed is that I have to go easy with "snare"-type string slaps and body hits compared to the way I'm used to playing to prevent them overwhelming everything else, but I don't think that's any fault of the Irig, but more that I'm not used to playing live with a mic and those elements haven't been picked up nearly so much in the past. And again blending the Irig mic with the onboard pick-up helps to keep those bits under control. Having the trailing cable and the DSP attached to your belt is a bit of a pfaff, but not unworkably so, and I did find myself very conscious of the need to be careful with that cable when moving about, but overall a successful first public outing!
