Anyone heard of Victor guitars? I volunteer in a charity shop and there was one in the office awaiting repair (nasty split at the bottom where the back joins the side) It was an electro acoustic and looked to me to be an Ovation copy. It had a plain wooden top and a plastic/resin bowlback, just like those from Ovation. It also had the fancy rosette around the soundhole. But the headstock was plain with the name Victor and what looked like a pair of wings below.

I'll try to get a photo tomorrow. A guy is supposed to be coming in to repair it. It looks nice.

I'm assuming it's not one of this guy's pieces? There are 60s Japanese electrics around with the brand name Victor - it looks to me like a Teisco, so one would assume they were just an importer. It could be that someone revived the name again later perhaps. Is there a soundhole label in the guitar? That might offer some more clues.

I do remember some Ovation copies that I think were called Victor. Never played one though.

For a while there were quite a few Ovation copies / those were the days when Ovations were the things to have!

All thats wrong with it as far as I can tell is the binding has come away near the bum end. Oh and the rosette lifts off but its just a plastic ring

I had an Ovation copy once. It was a Clarissa (made in Italy). Not bad for the money but not great either! I'm glad to see they made both sexes in Ovation copies. probably where the mandolins came from....

A little bit of obsessive web-trawling seems to reveal that a guy named Bill Blue (yes, really!) had a guitar making business that went under the name of Liberty guitars. They were based in Smyrna Beach, Florida and were mainly known for resonator guitars it seems. However, there is a review of a Liberty parlour guitar on the Harmony Central guitar review site - but it is dated August 2003. I can't say this is the same manufacturer but it's possible this guy experimented with an Ovation copy. It's also possible someone bought an Ovation/Ovation copy and stuck a Liberty neck on it? Anyway, I'm thinking of writing a T.V. detective drama about a guy who tracks down unusual guitars. It's going to be called 'Luthier' and will star Idris Elba.

I suspect it's most likely to be one of the many short-lived "brands" used by one of the larger Far Eastern factories to distribute their stuff.
Often the same guitar would appear under different brandnames for different parts of the world.

And for a while there were a lot of Ovation copies - you have to be a certain age to remember them though!
