Yes, I know this is an acoustic (i.e. with strings) forum but I'll loosely link it by referring to Paul Simon having panpipes (pan flute) backing on some of his best numbers
Just back from hols in Madeira and saw a couple of street players from Peru playing panpipes and making them sound awesome; not a quantanemera to be heard thank heavens. I've always liked the sound but these guys really made them come alive. So, any of you forum people ever played them? And if you have
--are they easy/hard to learn (bearing in mind I don't even play a recorder or harmonica) --any particular rules for buying them and what's the minimum cost to but to get something decent --do you buy them in different keys a la harmonica or can you play a full 13 note scale. --I've seen all sorts of number of actual pipes in a 'set'; how many is ideal for a beginner?
Any help appreciated.

Not a clue, FFJ, but please let us know how you get on with learning them.
I really admire anybody who can get a good tune out of stuff you have to blow through, but I can't. I've tried all sorts and it always sounds crap.

I've no idea of the answer to any of fatfingerjohn's questions, but anyone wondering about the connection between panpipes and acoustic guitar should listen to some Henry Thomas (who played quills, a close relative) or the odd brave soul using them today, like Dom Flemons.

Thanks for the replies folks; looks like we have no experts so I may have to suck it and see (or is it blow?).
Here's another link I found to someone doing pipes and guitar.

John, if you practice, take your time and be careful. I tried them and found out that compared to my favourites (tin, low D) the fast moving of the head/neck to blow the right notes can literally give you a pain in the neck. Just make sure you don't tense up. and if you do, stop immediately.
