I'm learning to play a classical guitar which I'm enjoying very much and intend to carry on learning the only fly in the ointment is the banjo I really enjoy the sound of it, modern blues grass really floats my boat. Would it harm my rather slow progress with the guitar to learn to play the banjo at the same time.

No. Just play both, enjoy them both and don't worry. I play banjo and guitar, and neither has held back progress on the other. I'm a terrible player, but that's not the banjo's fault

I don't play banjo, but I do play mandolin and bouzouki as well as guitar. I've never found that the other instruments have held back my guitar-playing (chronic lack of talent has done that!). Obviously, playing more instruments means less practice time on each, but it also means you're learning different elements of technique and getting ideas that you can transfer between instruments.
