It's the new me: a man of few words and efficient action. A pithy man.

If members of this forum delight in anything, it is taking the pith.

Reminds me that I heard my son (15) say, "I can't be asked" the other day. As an old-school pedant always prepared to pick up on misuse of the language, I found myself trying to convince the little doubter that the expression is "Can't be arsed". He wouldn't have it. I've no idea which one "can't be a**ed" is, Brian. It's probably people like you that have confused the poor child.

Let's face it, we're all used to the shot of the go-bar deck from the builder's point of view
and I've recently mixed things up by introducing the drone view:
but has anyone wondered what it's like for the box, pinned down by a bunch of bamboos until it is deemed to have "gone off"? Well, here's the answer:
Pretty boring.
Released from its torture, this is how it looked:
Now I know time is limited before Halifax comes along and by then this guitar has to reach a certain stage of completion but that hasn't stopped me experimenting so I scribbled a couple of lines up by the heel end of the box:
and reached for a rasp:
I was half expecting it to speak to me and tell me what hell it had been under the go-bars but it kept its own counsel, had a quick shave and reappeared looking much recovered from its ordeal:
and even with a bit of smiling spruce shaped and bent on a hot iron (aluminium actually) to fit. A dribble of glue and a sliced inner-tube and we were glued and gagged:
with a result that looked "something like this":
Note the nasty injury to the side inflicted when I was chiselling the edges flush with the side. What a mess!
And what comes to mind immediately when you see this photo? Why, it's the bite-shaped binding that I used on the last jobby. And here it is again: the leftover artwork and the pot of ash slugs I obtained from it:
(If this is entirely meaningless, have a quick look at my last build called, somewhat embarrassingly, Howe Orme I Doing? (Still Larson About). Check the April 7th entry and following). I sanded out a row of alternate bites with my home-made drill-attachment:
and then glued some slugs into them:
with a result that looks like this:
Now then. For any young persons reading this - chance would be a fine thing - this is a real example of "randomness". I hadn't noticed how clearly the slugs were pointing either left or right so they just point the way they came out of the pot. Not, perhaps, a great result but definitely random. For any old folks reading this, here's a closeup:
Maybe this guitar should be called "Bland on Bland". (Another one for the old folks).

Rob Why does God allow bad things to happen? As you know, Leo, bad things never happen on my thread. I can't speak for other places.

Rob Why does God allow bad things to happen? Well, come to that - since Rob's inviting questions - what is "God"?

You have to fight to keep your head above water in this-here Projects & Builds department these days; there's a lot going on, which is good news. I've spent considerable time doing things which aren't clearly visible, like adjusting the heel and neck extension until they fit the reception committee in the box. This could still do with a little tweaking but the beauty of this kind of joint - thanks davewhite - is than you can easily come back to it with shims and shaves after the guitar is finished. I've drilled the holes through and marked the positions of the threaded inserts in the heel so, once the ironmongery arrives, I'll be ready to attach the neck to the body. As for the neck... I believe it was more or less a "blank" last time it appeared. Well, I've done some work on that, too. I cut a nice laburnum fretboard with a stripe down the side; at the moment it's 6mm thick all over. I calculated the fret positions for a 630mm neck and cut them on my super-duper jig, which seemed to work well. Then I glued the fingerboard/fretboard on to the neck. That can be the first picture of the post:
I did not hold back with the cramps(!) and the result was satisfactory:
It's a while since I included an action shot so here I am trimming the excess from the sides of the neck with my trusty Travis Perkins hard-point saw. You'll notice that the whole workshop was shaking with my exertions:
Next I trimmed a hefty slice from the back of the head and neck to bring it close to its final dimensions and, lo and behold, there emerged something rather like a guitar neck!
(If anyone's confused by the colour of the wood on the bottom of the neck extension - just above these words - it's because I glued a piece of walnut veneer on here and then sanded it gently back to precise dimensions having previously sliced off a smidgen too much; a small mistake, Leo, but the best I could come up with today).
