Hi all I've got a new wrinkle on my BLOG about learning guitar - my teacher created a video and list of tips for successful shifting. As this might be useful to others, I'm posting the link here... what should we think about when shifting? Hope you find it helpful! Julie

Interesting post Julie. I'd particularly highlight the "Targeting" idea as a great help. In particular I'd emphasise the visualisation element of this that I find particularly convincing. It echoes a more basic, but no less useful, recommendation that I recall given by the blues guitar teacher, Michael "Hawkeye" Herman about visualising what you are playing next before you do so. It does seem to lead to a more successful transition between different parts of the fretboard and also different chords. If there is less distance in the move it can also be applied with positive results without the need to look at where you are going too. A leap of more than 5 frets is asking a bit much for there being no guide from the eyes! It's a technique that can be applied to a lot of things. I recall using a visualisation technique for golf that was the most useful of any lesson on playing I had tried. It's astonishing how much better muscle / memory works when there's a proper focus on the right result. Visualising where the ball should go when hit right, rather than fearing it'll slice into the sea with the inevitable consequence that it does. For guitar, visualising where the fingers are landing rather than that "desperate grab" that's far more likely to fail. I think the targeting in advance does then improve the flow of the piece too. Possibly because your targeting and visualisation is of something played right that flows better. My thoughts as usual are pretty incoherent. Which still all leaves me a much worse guitar player than so many people, but hey-ho! Mark

Thanks Mark... now there's an idea for a new topic... memorizing pieces by visualization (something I have totally failed to master)! Julie

Well worth watching that several times - thanks Julie.
I already try to use the targeting method and the open strings, but have not come across any tuition on the other techniques. Very helpful.
