Hello, My name is Megan Kilpatrick and i'm 16 year old singer-songwriter from the Scottish Borders. I first picked up an acoustic guitar between the summer of me finishing primary school and starting secondary school. Playing guitar was something i picked up very quickly as i spent every spare minute i had practicing different techniques and finding my own style. Once i had picked up the basics of guitar i started playing it at school and at local open mics but people were getting bored of listening to different rhythms along to the same chords (mainly Em, C & G!). So i later decided to give singing a shot. I started doing covers of some chart songs and uploading them to youtube and onto facebook. I was amazed at the response! Recently i have played at local fundraising events, been on local radios, played school shows and got the amazing opportunity play in front of 3/400 people at the Hawick Hootenanny; I have just got started with music and i have a long way to go and a lot to learn but i would love to have the pleasure of taking the "Samhradh" with me in my travels. It is a beautifully crafted guitar and it's also really nice to see the way it has been made. I am in the process of writing some new material and organizing an Ep to be released next year. Here is some samples of some original music i recorded a couple of years back;

Hi Megan, Welcome to the Competition. I've only had chance to listen to "It's You" so far but I'm well impressed. I'll listen to your other recordings later tonight/tomorrow.

Hello, it's one of my own songs, i thought i might as well show that i can write my own material as well as doing covers so i risked it and did an original and i think they all enjoyed it! Thank you very much

Good to see you over in this competition thread with some of your own material Megan. Glad you have had a good response to performing your originals live too - that should tell you more than we probably can! But I did enjoy listening to your recordings - thanks for posting them. Any more gigs lined up?
Keith
(...btw, does your dad play guitar?)

Megan,
That's a good body of your own work to build on for one so young and I look forwards to hearing more of it. What set up are you using to record as getting a good quality will help put your work forward more and there will be lots of suggestions on the Forum here on some cheap kit that may help.

Thanks again everyone for the support! Keith, I have got some major exams coming up in the next couple of months so I've not had the chance to get any gigs sorted out but next year i have the opportunity to go Germany with the Borders Young Musicians taking part in the Guitar Ensemble which will be a great way to build up my experience on guitar and get tips from other to help me improve! Yes, my dad used to play a lot of guitar in his 20's but he put it aside slightly when my sister and i were born! Many people are surprised at the amount of songs i have written but i really enjoy writing and it's something i will never grow tired of (even when i get writers block!) I recorded all the tracks on soundcloud using a 'boss digital recorder BR-600' which was good for what i was doing at that time but I recently bought a desktop recording kit with the software 'cakewalk' on it and so far i am very impressed with the sound quality! I shall be recording a lot more in better high quality as i agree completely with you that the better the quality the more it will help.

Ah, the dreaded exam season approaches! Can empathise with that - my long term memory is still fairly intact! All the best for the revision and for the exams themselves Megan. Keith

Although they were long ago for me too (about 23 years I think), I still remember the revision season with dread!! It always coincided with the World Snooker Championships in Sheffield, and for some inexplicable reason I seemed to become an avid Stephen Hendry fan at that time All the best with the studying and good luck with your exams

Here is a cover i did a while back. I first performed it in front of my class whilst in Belgium at our private memorial service for the victims of the first world war. At this point i never really knew how much a song could really make you think about the people you are surrounded by and also that life is short so why not live it to the fullest everyday. This song really triggered these emotions from inside of me and it is a song i will never forget. This video was taken a month after i went to Belgium.
