I cannot find information, in the booklet, about the guitar used on each track. Nor is there information about guitar tunings. Sorry andyhowell . The Tab was a single sheet for Jasper's.

There are some instrumental interlude's! This is a seriously classy album with a wonderful production. The guitar playing is excellent and his singing probably the best ever. A greta selection of songs whether they be originals, covers or traditional. He reckons it is his best yet and he may be right. As I promised earlier in this thread Andy I have just ordered it (along with Miles Davis 'A Kind of Blue') but it will be sent to Father Christmas for delivery on Xmas Day Phil

I'd have been much happier if the list of artists playing on the album had stopped at just Martin Simpson, to me the other eight people that appear on it spoil the effect for me.
Now Kind of Blue, we are in a totally different league, one of the four most important albums of any genre ever made, the front line off Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Julian Adderley are outstanding, this album completely changed the way Jazz was played and thought about, bit like Lieg and Lief did for folk. (the other two are Sgt Pepper and Pet Sounds).

thanks to Spotify I heard a bit of it.
Truth be told, I wouldn't be surprised if Jackson C. Frank would turn in his grave.
Man! Blues Run The Game is supposed to be a sad, slightly depressive song! Lots of feeling and Blues!
Simpson made a happy appalachian singalong song of it, but didn't change the lrics. I guess that's what'S called Artistic Freedom......

It's funny how you associate certain sounds with certain performers. A great example is Django and the Selmer guitar. Yes, on recordings where he's amplified Django sounded great, but it just isn't the same. I feel the same about MS and Sobell guitars. To me, that sound and his playing were the perfect combination. It's a shame, 'cos his music just gets better and better, as the years go by, but whenever I hear him play the PRS, I just wish it was a Sobell. Nigel www.nkforsterguitars.com

I wonder if there are any other artists in the acoustic universe who provoke such a variety of opinions? (The Marmite String Band? ) Come to think of it, maybe The Unthanks...?

While I do like the new album, I would agree that Martin Simpson on his own would be the best option. Like "Vagrant Stanzas", when he was encouraged by his near neighbour Richard Hawley to record a new album completely solo. The ambition was to record just one man and his guitar (or banjo) close-miked and personal, with most of the performances being first or second takes. That album works so very well for me. It seems much more a personal and emotional statement. But I find I have this feeling about nearly all solo singer / songwriters and their studio albums. There have been a good number of CDs I have got of artists who I have really enjoyed when hearing them do live solo work on their own - but then the CD studio recording has all these extra instruments and musicians and added strings etc. The CD ends up played once and then finds its way to the charity shop. In its defence "Trails and Tribulations" is one of the best attempts I've heard where a solo artist is joined by others. Those on the album with him sound like they're doing more than just playing the notes. Mark
