Continuing the sparse sounds of Vagrant Stanzas but with a little more playing from Andy Cutting, John Smith, Nancy Kerr and others.
A lovely album with a great choice of contemporary songs, trad songs and a handful of cracking originals. A lot of the playing here is pretty restrained and it all sounds better for it.
A great album.

Nowt wrong with songs if the singers voice is pleasing to my ears Ooh, picky! I seem to remember a thread on here in which a number of people were not particularly enamoured with his singing voice (scroll down) Martin SimpsonHowever, I do not want to turn this into a lets criticise Martin Simpson's voice thread. For the record I have 11 of his albums including Vagrant Stanzas (Deluxe Edition!!) which I like and I do think he is an exceptional talent (guitar god ). For me I think it must depend on the type of song he sings - on some I like his singing and on some less so. Perhaps it's the affectations he puts on some phrases - it's strange really Anyway, on a positive note I like this from the new CD : Phil PS I really love his banjo playing, excellent .

Phil Taylor: yes, well (*adopts Boris Johnson-style bluster when realising he's been found out*) - that was then, this is now, I mean, people don't want to know about this, ask me a proper question, pfah, pfah... Actually I have nothing to be embarrassed about. You just admitted, on a public forum, that you (and I selectively quote), "love banjo playing". That's the end of your credibility, my friend...

There are some instrumental interlude's!
This is a seriously classy album with a wonderful production. The guitar playing is excellent and his singing probably the best ever. A greta selection of songs whether they be originals, covers or traditional. He reckons it is his best yet and he may be right.

So you'd recommend it, yes? I certainly would. He also deserve plaudits for keeping the price down as well. Great value,

Ahhh you cheated there with your selective quote . For the record I actually said I love his banjo playing. It's restrained, tasteful and very melodic with nice rounded tone and not at all harsh sounding and manic like most banjo playing I hear. P

Andy, I have now listened to the Amazon preview:
Here
and as a result I have decided to make a remarkable and somewhat embarrassing turnaround.
It does sound rather good as you say Andy and I will buy this on my return from Spain mid October.
Phil
PS I do buy the occasional singist CD
