I spent an excellent couple of hours this morning at a guitar masterclass given by Gordon Giltrap as part of Lancaster Music Festival. There were only about a dozen people there, so he made it a really informal session. He played some of his pieces, gave some demonstrations of technique, and told some stories about his career and his approach to playing. He was playing a custom Fylde, and he didn't use any amplification. I was on the front row just a few feet away from him, so I got the full acoustic experience.
He came across as a genuinely humble man who really loves the instrument and the music. He got the guitar players in the audience to talk about our guitars, and he was very enthusiastic about British makers. He's a brilliant player - his demonstration of harp technique was breathtaking. The session was only supposed to last for about an hour, but after about 45 minutes he suggested we all get coffee and come back. In the end, we were there for about 2 hours, and he only stopped then because there was another event on.
All in all, an excellent event with some superb music and great conversation.

It's good to know that Gordon has now recovered enough from very serious illness to do a masterclass like this. I am trying not to envy you your experience! Mark

Sounds like you had a very worthwhile couple of hours there. It must be great to listen and watch someone with literally decades of experience in an informal setting like that.
