Just got back from seeing these two lovely people perform in Bristol this evening. Ben played his multiscale Fylde, a nylon strung guitar and a Les Paul, all to great effect and with his usual skill and tasteful elegance. Josie sang as angelically as ever and her usual self-deprecating between-song banter went down well with the large audience most of whom would never have heard of her or Ben. Their soundman did a fine job of of achieving a very natural sound at a realistic volume. I reckon they must have won a lot of new friends with their performance this evening. By a lovely coincidence Mrs O'C and I bumped into Ben on the stairs in the crowd on the way out, and we were soon joined by Josie too. A few minutes to talk guitars with Ben and to hear Josie's take on touring larger venues before they had to disappear to man (and woman) their merchandise stall. Great to see them again. Oh yes, there was someone else on the bill. Some bloke in a beret playing a Lowden. Richard something or other. Not a bad player at all, deserves to do well. Keith

Would like to hear more about the bloke in the beret.. Sadly, RT's set was, for me, spoiled by being too loud overall, vocally muddy and muffled, the guitar too boomy in the bass, and harsh enough in the treble to cut your ears off - the naturally quieter songs were just about OK and maintained decent balance and dynamics, but the rest was enough to make me want to go to the desk (only several feet to my right) and do some tweaking! Ben and Josie's soundman did a great job, but RTs soundman not only wore a beret, but seemed determined to overdo everything. RT's live acoustic sound has never been great IMHO (Sunrise mag pu and a fair bit of processing) but this was the worst I've heard it. I'm a huge fan of MrT, but if this had been my first experience of him I doubt I'd have given him another listen. I'd be interested to hear how some of the other gigs on the tour sound.... Keith

Interesting, I've never seen him before, although I can compare him to another bearded guy playing a big Lowden, so he better be good

Was this him Keith, i.e. Simon Tassano? He was his regular sound engineer and always did a fine job at RT gigs I've been to. Maybe he's moved on.

Sad to hear that. His three solo acoustic cd's sound great. Strange that he lets his acoustic gigs sound under par.
Ben and Josienne are great, btw.

I was there on 14th too. Just brilliant! I was squinting at the stage to try and see if Ben had a fan fret, seems he does !

I had a play on it then - very nice indeed! (click to enlarge) Keith

Sadly Mrs b and I were unable to attend the show in Edinburgh last night as we're both still in the grips of a horrid virus that has us coughing uncontrollably every few minutes. You can't sit seven rows from the stage and be doing that all night.
Disappointment assuaged somewhat today by Cara Dillon's gorgeous Wanderer (which has jumped straight into the national album charts at no 44).

And there I was imagining you having a great time last night. Hope you both recover soon. I'm only just feeling partly human again after 3 weeks of pestilence. Ah, Cara Keith
