Martin has said most of what needs to be said in his review of the Edinburgh Gig. I've seen Ralph on almost every autumn tour for more years than I care to remember. This was one of the best sets I have heard for a few years. The two supports were twi women from Cornwall. Ralph said that it is very difficult for songwriters to play anywhere other than pubs, even in folk clubs. How right he is!
His live sound was superb with the guitar pickup being blended with an external mic. At this gig I thought the Gibson sounded far better than the Martin — the Martin needed some mids taken out of the signal, but these things are often subjective!
Years go Ralph told me he keeps a record of every set he has played at each venue — he always tries to ensure as little repetition from one year to another. I don't know if he still does this but I suspect he does as the set list changes a great del from one gig to another.
This was the set he played in Birmingham. I missed the name of one newish song which has only been put out with the audiobook of his biography. I think I may have missed d another one along the way. Anyhow, this is how iIremember it. A lovely set.
