I have never seen Richard Thompson before and (shamefully) am mostly unfamiliar with his music, so I went with no history or expectations other than looking forward to seeing a great musician.
As per the gig that ocarolan attended earlier in the month, RT was ably supported by Josienne Clark and Ben Walker, who played originals and covers and told a few stories, mostly self-deprecating, and memorably Josienne recounted a tale about a disastrous gig in Chicago where they were supported by an unpopular local band who seemingly had no friends as no one turned up, no audience arrived... shame on Chicago as they missed a treat. Ben played a Fylde with a cut away together with a Gibson Les Paul on one number, and a couple of classical guitars for the majority of the songs they performed last night.
They were excellent and received a very enthusiastic response from the packed auditorium, rightly so.
Richard Thompson took the stage after a short interlude with his Lowden which he used for all of his songs and, I'm pleased to say, the sound for both his set and Josienne and Ben's was spot on, I went with a friend who I used to work with, who is an RT nut and we were joined by a couple of his mates, all of whom had seen Richard many times in various guises.... anyway he bought the tickets on the day of their release so we were second row and had a great view of the performance, it is was a bonus to be so close to see both Richard's and Ben's guitar work and technique.
Richard Thompson was on great form and obviously most of the audience were devotees but as I'd never seen him before I can objectively say he was bloody awesome! I got a bit of a surprise when he played one of scorpiodog's songs.... Vincent Black something.... not sure I liked what he'd done with it but none the less it was a good effort I also thought Keith had trademarked the beard, Lowden and thumb pick combination so felt RT was being a little presumptuous to say the least, but I suppose he did at least accessorise with a beret, so just about got away with it.
I'm not usually one to take videos during gigs but on this occasion as I was so close I managed to get a discrete recording, unfortunately I missed the beginning and I do not know the name of the song but he really hits the high notes towards the end and I think it preceded Vincent Black Lightening which made for a great one-two combination.
So all in all a great night much merriment, beer and wine was consumed and I feel a bit delicate today but certainly and very glad that I have experienced Richard Thompson live, solo and acoustically, he sang and played superbly and told a some good stories too.... Josienne and Ben were equally entertaining.
