During the time I was unable to use my left hand index finger - tip cut by bottle - I watched a video which included Martin Simpson emphasising the simplicity for left hand gained from open and altered tuning. So I wondered could I manage an improv that would sound OK just using middle and ring fingers of my left hand. Pinky is off limits with arthritic joints. Obviously a huge reduction in mobility with reduced finger span! As I have no chance to play at the moment in the midst of puppy mania I ended up listening to that improv again while trying to keep the pup entertained. It occurred to me that it didn't sound much different to my usual with the index finger is use too. This maybe says more about my normal standard of playing than it does about any skill in only using two fingers. Or maybe it's just due to altered tuning. In this case DADGAD. Lovely playing, Mark! thanks for sharing I think that I'm using middle and especially ring finger more than using my index finger, but then I'm playing mostly DADGAD anyway

You are Django, and I claim my five pounds! Oh that's a shame Derek. I had the £5 all ready to send and the puppy ate it! ... we need video evidence! Keith I'll maybe give that a go if I get a chance to play again, and if we can avoid the puppy eating the camera. Seems to be a theme with these responses! Lovely playing, Mark! thanks for sharing I think that I'm using middle and especially ring finger more than using my index finger, but then I'm playing mostly DADGAD anyway Thanks for the positive comments! Interesting what you say about DADGAD. I'm definitely thinking that DADGAD is particularly suited for minimal fretting hand use. It gets my vote as my 'go to' tuning anyway. Mark

I recently watch a video with Phil X in it, he's an electric rock guitarist for those who haven't come across him. However his point was when he gets stuck in a rut playing a solo he often tries it without using his index finger. It makes the solo change dynamics totally and he puts hammer ons , pull offs and slides in to compensated for the ruduced finger options.
