So which albums put out this past year have really got you going?
I've very much enjoyed Folk Singer Vol. 2 by Willie Watson & Dog by Charlie Parr.

Joan Shelley - Joan Shelley -
James Elkington - Wintres Woma -
Both really great sounding records with acoustic guitar and vocals at the fore - both recorded at 'The Loft' in Chicago (Wilco's studio)

This is a track from a wonderfully named Zephaniah Ohora a modern C & W artist based in New York (thats in America) his first album This Highway which incidentally he crowdfunded to pay for it, is IMHO a superb first album. All the tracks are very good these are again IMHO the two stand out tracks which I just can't stop playing it . It has some great players on it.

I have to agree about Charlie Parr, James Elkington, Joan Shelly and I'll add another Colter Wall's self titled debut. On the electric side the National's Sleep Well Beast is great too.

Must confess I'm still buying albums from the 1970s rather than the modern era. Not sure I bought anything that was released last year. Maybe Ralph McTell & Wizz Jones? Or was that the year before?

I too have tended to be getting more albums from the past than the present.
Only 3 albums I got that were put out in 2017 particularly stand out, and 2 are from forum members.
Not in any particular order :- Philip Taylor - One year On David White - Diamonds in the Rough Martin Simpson - Trails and Tribulations
Though the last of these only just gets in on the list - Vagrant Stanzas remains my "go to" of his CDs.

The East Pointers “WHat w e Leave Behind” is one of my fa vourites, plus another vote for Sleep Well Beast. I bought that one, and it’s great! Others ive enjoyed are Eliza Carthy and the Wayward band, and my most favourite discovery of all, Väsen’s brilliant album “Brewed”. I am a big fan of ECM stuff, and the last few months have seen some stunning releases from Bjorn Mayer, Anour Brahem, and the Danish String Quartet. In fact, guitar wise, the only album of guitar music I have bought is Dominic Miller’s debut album for ECM. Robbie

They're also worth seeing live if they come near you. They played in a village hall a few miles from us last year, great night out

Cara Dillon: "Wanderer". Her best album to date, more stripped down than previous offerings, it's basically her and husband Sam on piano or guitar, with minimal, but very effective, use of extra guitar(s), violin and backing vocal. It's without doubt the most relaxing album to listen to in my collection. The final track "Dubhdara" is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard.

Discovered them on YouTube I think, and really loved the energy, and that great Banjo playing! Will try and catch them at some point. Robbie

I'll add another Colter Wall's self titled debut. +1 on that. One of this year's best discoveries for me!

To my shame I haven't bought any new albums this year I was given the latest Beck album as a chrimbo present and it sounds ok on first listen, so that will have to be mine...

Best buys of 2017?
I really enjoy Michael Watt' Vetiver. It might not be everyone's cup of tea but it is the absolute pinnacle of touch and feel. I also enjoyed our own Phil Taylor's album. Phil has a great eat for an original tune and isn't obsessed wit pure, blinding, technique and speed. Phil's album might not be up there with the greats but I find I enjoy listening to it more than many offerings from the greats! And that's what music is about I guess.
I'm struggling for release dates (as some might have been back end of 2016) but these are some others:
Rodney Crowell, Close Ties. Josienne Clarke and Ben Walker, Overnight Rhiannon Middens, Freedom Highway Martin Simpson, Trials and Tribulations Songs of Separation Karine Polwart, A Pocket of Wind Resistance Tim O'Brien, Where the River Meets the Road.
And I can't miss off the fabulous Robert Finley, going Platinum — even though this is not acoustic.
