I'm sorry to say that 2018 is a year that includes one of those "significant" birthdays for me,* so I decided that if I have to face the fact of having been on earth for four whole decades then I should at least celebrate/console myself with some kind of stringed and fretted goodness. I've been on the lookout for a good octave mandolin for a while now, and after getting the chance to play Martin's lovely 'Ceol Binn Mor' at the Halifax meet-up I had a quiet word with Dave and he agreed to build one for me. As some of you will know, this instrument has a bit of forum history as Dave designed the original one with Keith. After a bit of discussion with Dave, we settled on European Spruce for the top with English Walnut for the back and sides and Ovangkol bindings. I mentioned to Dave that I liked the idea of the walnut because I like using English woods where possible, so he suggested that we go with bog oak for the fingerboard and bridge. Dave has started a build page on his website: www.defaoiteguitars.com/page60.htm I'll try to post some of the photos (with Dave's permission) over here too as it goes along. *I nearly said 'I know, it's hard to believe, 21 at last', then felt depressed about being old enough to make that joke.

Excellent news Simon! You'll not be disappointed - Martin and I have not yet managed to get CBM I and CBM II to Halifax at the same time, but now CBM III is on the horizon perhaps HB9 could contain a CBM trio moment!

I'm really looking forward to this build. My next build will probably be an "Irish" 4-course bouzouki with similar specifications and construction (albeit with longer scale length), so I will follow this build both here and on Dave's site with great interest.

Sorry for the lack of updates - it’s been a bit of a week. The instrument is beginning to take shape now, and Dave’s latest picture gives an idea of how the ovangkol bindings will look with the walnut back and sides. It’s the bottom photo here: www.defaoiteguitars.com/page60.htmI think the ovangkol is going to look great.

I have one of Dave's mandolins, CB3, that I bought third hand (or 4th?) from this forum and it has been gigged so has a few scratches etc. Mahogany, lovely sound and nice comfortable neck. I don't play it much at all being mainly a guitar man and perhaps should sell it but when I get it out I always admire the sound, organic look and feel and think I'll keep this. I'm sure you will love this instrument Phil

Latest picture from Dave, and CBM is now looking very much like an instrument! It isn't finished yet - literally, Dave hasn't put the finish on it - but this is what it looks like strung up for the first time. Dave also sent me a recording of the first notes to come out of it - you'll have to take my word for it, but it sounds EXCELLENT... cbm first stringing (pre-finish) by Simon Marsden, on Flickr
