Sunday 28 Jan 2018 http://instagr.am/p/Bekph5oFBnZ I'd never heard Rory Butler before. As soon as he began I got a real John Martyn vibe from him. The then went on to talk about a John Martyn convention he'd played at, so there was the connection, Celtic or otherwise. His picking and singing styles were very gentle and understated. Great sound in the auditorium. One of the things I enjoy about the CC festival is the sound engineering and venues and discerning audiences. Although his style was gentle and lovely, I found it rather samey after a few songs. Not to disparage the guy or anything, but it wasn't what I was going to see... That would be I'm with Her, a three-piece comprising three artists whose careers I've been following for quite some time, Sarah Jarosz, Sara Watkins and Aoife O'Donovan. I've heard their solo stuff and listen to it a lot. It's right in my wheelhouse. But would the three together bring something even more special? Eh, yes and no. Again the sound was superb - three gals round a single mic with acoustic guitar, mandolin, uke, fiddle, octave mandolin. No bass, no percussion. And those voices. Whoa! Gorgeous in every respect. Some of it utterly sublime, but some songs were just 'good'. Not a bad gig to be at for sure. The material was varied, with each taking the lead on different songs, swapping instruments (yep, multi instrumentalists as well) and even an a cappella foot-stomping cover of a Nina Simone song that was done very well indeed. The biggest downside was the time. They must've played no more than 45 minutes, but don't they say always leave them wanting more? Well, I did want more and that's how they left me. They've got an album due out next month so I'm looking forward to that.
