I heard that this Americana duo had gone down very well at Celtic Connections and, as luck would have it, they were on last night just 20 minutes drive away. The Kirkcaldy Acoustic Music Club is held every Thursday at the Polish Club. They have guests most weeks and a really enjoyable and friendly "session", which is really an open mic sans mic, once a month. The venue's low ceiling and lighting gives it a cosy feel and there's a bar at the back of the room. I would say it holds around 80-90 souls. They've an excellent in-house Yamaha PA. Red Tail Ring (I forgot to ask them about that name) are Laurel Premo on fiddle, clawhammer 5 string banjo (check her out Martin ) and vocal and Michael Beauchamp on guitar, banjo and vocal. They both hail from Michigan and perform traditional American folk, old-time music, bluegrass and some of their own compositions. Their website describes their music as "lush, intricate arrangements of original folk music and traditional ballads". Laurel is the ear-grabbing brilliant musician, whilst Michael plays his Martin dreadnought with clever understatement. They produce the most breath-taking vocal and musical harmonies, Laurel using double-bowed strings on the fiddle to cleverly add to the harmonic mix. I can honestly say I sat entranced right through both halves of the show. They're really engaging and witty and the warmth coming back at them from the audience was almost palpable. Three tunes stand out in my memory: Love In A City (a ballad composed by Michael), some hoedown tunes played by Laurel on the fiddle and John Prine's Christmas in Prison. They're doing a few more shows on this tour: catch them if you can. You'll be so glad you did.
