I was perusing The Music Gallery in Berwick on Tweed last week. Was looking at guitars mainly but noticed they had some s/h banjos in there. Check them out online or FB. Funnily enough that was where I bought my Lowden G9! It's a nice friendly store but their website and FB page are useless! I'll give them a call when I'm ready to buy, thanks. |

This thread got me having a wee look at banjo stuff online. I hadn't realised that there were so many types of banjo out there.  It all looks very confusing even to try to work out the type of banjo that's best (cue jokes about broken ones!), let alone finding a good quality one. Mark Aye it's a minefield Mark and, as Martin implies, there's a lot of dross out there! |

I'll second Martin's mention of the Deering Goodtime series, I recently picked up an 'Americana' version of their open back Goodtime banjo, it's got a 12 inch head so is a little warmer and fuller, really comfortable and resonant.

Mark My summary would be: Guitar Banjo, Mandolin Banjo, Ukulele Banjo - basically banjo versions of the eponymous instrument, get one of these if you already play that instrument and just want a different sound. Plectrum Banjo - mostly trad jazz chord playing Tenor Banjo - mostly trad Irish melody playing, but jazz chording is possible. Uses fifths tuning like mandolin and fiddle family so easy to transition from there. 5-string Banjo - quite versatile (bluegrass 3-finger "Scruggs" style, old-timey clawhammer/frailing styles, minstrel styles), the tunings are supposedly designed to make playing tunes as easy as possible but the styles are generally quite unlike any other instrument. You might find some antique 6- or 7-string banjos too, about which I know nothing. Did I miss any? |
