Great idea Gordon. I was considering one of these. She'd kill me if she saw this Yes, one of those, coupled with a set of THESE 'HINGS would do the trick I reckon.

I'll second Martin's mention of the Deering Goodtime series, I recently picked up an 'Americana' version of their open back Goodtime banjo, it's got a 12 inch head so is a little warmer and fuller, really comfortable and resonant. I’ll add my name to this suggestion too. From the biggest manufacturer of the lot, with a very good reputation, you get a very playable and good sounding banjo. I have 6 banjos currently. !!

It gives me great pleasure to announce that a new banjo player has arrived on the scene. Andy P has a natural affinity for anti-social behaviour and noise pollution, and as such is the epitome of a modern banjoist Let the forum rejoice The practice is going well. I can keep going for up to ten minutes, which I regard as an achievement. After that, I switch to practising the fiddle, which I've at long last also decided to learn. The violin is a 1909 German model distributed by Craig's Celebrated Violins of Aberdeen. It's been in my family all my life (as have I). I haven't managed to reach the 10 minute mark on the fiddle yet

Hope your Valentine's night celebrations are lasting longer than the banjo and fiddling practice...

My condolences to her. Keith

I'm proud of you, Andy PKeeping going in the face of such hostility and ridicule is the hallmark of the banjo player We shall overcome!! PS Glad to hear you've decided to give the fiddle another try - I've got some 'old time' fiddle tuition bits and pieces if you'd like a look...

A fiddle is, at least, a proper instrument.

A fiddle is, at least, a proper instrument. Martin gave me several useful tips, one of which was to rise above the goading. We are the chosen ones, he said. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that plays the banjo with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition; And gentlemen in England (and Scotland!) now a-bed Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not playing too, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That played with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

I'm proud to serve Martin Aye, anything to help is useful, thanks. No hurry, I'm just concentrating on getting the bowing straight and smooth at the moment (already I'm under a self-imposed embargo until the mute arrives )

Deering Goodtime is bang for the buck, as the Americans say. A fine instrument when struggling with the clawhammer. I strive to sound like Steve Baughman, but not quite there yet..
