I collected Ceol Binn Taistealai (CBT) safely from the East Anglia Guitar Festival yesterday and recorded a quick comparison on the Zoom H4N this morning: soundcloud.com/mike-floorstand/ceol-binn-comparison-ryansThis is a WAV file, not sure if everyone can hear that? but let me know and I can convert to MP3 if necessary. The recording is Ryan's Polka, played first on my own Ceol Binn mandolin (cedar/cuban mahogany) made by Dave last summer, followed by CBT (which is spruce/bubinga) made by Dave this Spring. CBT has a super-low action and (probably not helped by being in a hot barn - the festival mentioned above - all day yesterday!) possibly has a bit of fret buzz on the treble strings, but I wanted to get something recorded early in her life!

You didn't waste any time there Joe! Excellent! WAV file is fine. Using laptop just now - will have a proper listen shortly on some better speakers. Keith

Joe,
That was interesting - the De Faoite voice in both of them but differences due to age and wood differences. It was interesting hearing all three being played. I thought I could hear a slight buzz on the trebles at the Show as well so try playing with a capo on CBT and if the buzz goes away it's the nut if not the saddle may need raising slightly. I can drop over one evening or at the weekend to sort it before you put the new set of strings on if you haven't already done so.
I've heard that tune so many times in sessions but didn't know it's name. Great tune and playing.

My main instrument is: probably needing new strings

great playing, Joe ... really good to have a comparison tune.
I've not got the world's best ears but even I could tell the difference - be interesting to hear what CBT sounds like after being played with by everyone else on the road trip. Amazingly, I even managed to hear the faint buzzing on the treble strings which would seem to suggest some remedial work needs doing by Dave.
I can't wait to give the longer scale length (hence more space for my fingers!) a chance.

Just listened on better speakers - nicely played and recorded Joe - polkatastic. I think I can hear the buzz too, certainly on the open top course and at frets two and three plus fret 5 on the A strings - yes/no? Not always there, depending presumably on your angle and force of attack. I'm sure Dave will easily sort it if it doesn't settle down soon. Enjoy mandolinning twinning! Keith

They both sound fantastic. The tonal differences seem not too massive to my ears.
The Zoom H4N seemed to do a great job with the recording too.

Agreed. Both mandolins sound very good indeed - much clarity and warmth in the tone. There is certainly a slight difference between the two, and I have no idea which sound I prefer
