I m going to try and do this review in two ways. One a review of the guitar and the other a review of the process of having a custom guitar made.
First thing to say is the reason for wanting the guitar is that I turned 40 at the end of last year. I ve got enough socks and aftershave so all my family just chucked some cash in the pot so I could get something of quality to keep and what better than a guitar.
I ve played electric guitar for a long while but have only really moved over to acoustic guitar in the last couple of years. This means I don't have a wide knowledge that you really need to spec a custom instrument. Luckily I feel I was guided quite well by Francis.
Certain things I knew I wanted, 12 fret, slotted headstock but body shape, woods, neck were all up for decision.
After chatting to Francis about my style of playing and music I liked we settled on a single 0.
Wood choice was next. I was given some audio samples of various combinations and settled on spruce and rosewood. In the end we went for bocote which has similar properties to rosewood. The fretboard and bridge are bog oak which looks great and blows my mind everytime I think how old it is.
After that most of the decisions were based on aesthetics. I knew I wanted a few quirky bits like only 13 frets then an inlay in the fretboard. I would come up with some strange design idea and then Francis would figure out a way to make it work and indeed look better than I imagined anyway.
Thanks to the wonders of the Internet its possible for me on one side of the country to talk to Francis on the other side, and to get him to build something that would be very personal to me, with relative confidence. Thanks mainly to this forum. Reading what others thought of his guitars and following build threads is a great service.
There are certain things you can never tell till you get your hands on a guitar, weight, how it sits and of course tone and volume. What I will say is Francis lead me through the whole process of buying remotely and kept me up to date with the build brilliantly. I ll try to follow this up with guitar review soon.
