I've currently got 2 guitars in progress and rather than finish them I thought it would be a better idea to start another one.... It will be a 0-28, 12 fret with slotted headstock. I've decide to make this one and finish the 000 I'm building at the same time after it's repair. I'm also having a few issues with the quilted sapele as the sides seemed to have cupped, I've ordered a bending iron from the luthiers bench so when that turns up i'll have a go at getting the sides into shape. In the meantime here is the progress so far with the parlour. Australian blackwood back and sides Torrefied sitka sounboard American mahogany neck Rocklite Ebano bindings, bridge, fretboard and headstock veneer Scahller grandtune tuners with ebony buttons sounboard ready for making the rosette, you can see the difference in colour between the torrefied sitka and natural sitka. jointing the back planing the back strip Preparing the soundboard braces Sides bent, I had some rather unpleasant staining in the wood but it sanded out no problem. Well that's it for now, should be ready to close the box in the next few days. The neck blank has been completed a while back so once the box is closed i'll make a start on that. Really love the look of this wood, will definitely be using it again Bindings with the purflings glued on, scraped flush and taped up ready for bending

Ash it's coming on well ashley I like the simple lines in the top bracing - not sure about the torrefied spruce, must give it a try at some stage

Finishng stuff is all very well, ashley , but it's the starting of stuff that is the most exciting

Starting is for sure exciting but hearing the finished guitar is the best bit The torrefied sitka is meant to sound really good, For me the colour isn’t nice compared to normal spruce and it is a lot more brittle. Im not sure I’ll use it again unless the sound makes it worthwhile. As for the bracing I want to get a sound I’m happy with using conventional x bracing and then experiment a bit with different patterns. The above pics are just rough and the bracing needs refining but not too much to do now Thanks for the comments

Inside of the guitar has been finished, I decided to give the interior a couple of coats of shellac as I'm slightly in love with this Australian Blackwood. A quick mock up of how the label will look, going to change in slightly and make it slightly bigger Bindings bent and ready to go Sides have been scrapped and sanded and couldn't resist taking a pic when wiping them don So this afternoons job is the binding, I'm dreading this step actually as the torrefied sitka is so brittle. The top and edges of the sides have had a couple of coats of shellac to try and help reduce tear out, fingers crossed it will go smoothly!

Bindings channels were cut with no disasters, had a bit of a battle getting the bindings in this time so have changed the way I glue in the bindings and purflings. I'm not sure if I do this the best way as I use CA glue, I now glue in the purflings separately from the bindings as it proved difficult to get both the fit well at the same time. Also the bearings I have for the router bit leave too much binding to be scraped off, ll try getting a different size bearing or thickness the bindings before hand. At the moment i also bend the bindings in the fox bender but when my bending iron arrives I'll use this to make them fit perfectly before gluing in.

Well done Ash - superb timber (Oh and the workmanship isn't too bad either)

Thanks Francis, I love the wood, very pretty and easy to work with. So much to learn building guitars by hand, the only way to learn seems to be by making mistakes, learning plenty still haha

I actually got this set on eBay from Australia, I can’t seem to find the seller at the moment but i’ll keep looking. The name curly timbers appears on the PayPal transaction

I've used him a few times now Francis and he's been spot on, must have added some new wood as I don't remember seeing that before. I'll give it a try once I've got a couple more finished.

Back from my holiday so I managed to get a couple of hours in the worshop today Cutting the end graft channel, just done using a stanley knife and chisels End graft installed, decided to try installing without using mitres this time, needs a bit of cleaning up. I think the purfling joints are getting better but still need some work to get them upto scratch.
