I used to play it years ago - pretty straight forward but take your time building it up to speed. It's actually Martin's tune and not by that man trad.

Thanks, the TAB I have says its trad , the opening bar hammer on and pull off's isn't clear to me Just dug out my Mel Bay book of the tab for "Cool and Usual" and "Shepherd's Delight" is definitely written by Martin and there aren't any hammer on's or pull offs in the opening bar - none appear until bar 3. I suspect that you are having trouble as the tab you have may be "bootleg" and not Martin's transcription.

Martin's arrangement (no hammer ons in first bar) can be found in the Ramble to Cashel tab book which I believe is a free download from somewhere or other. I can email it you you if you can't find it, John. The tune is noted as trad there, though Mr S has copyright on his arrangement!

The tune is noted as trad there, though Mr S has copyright on his arrangement! Keith On the "Cool and Usual" CD "Shepherd's Delight" is down as M.Simpson and in the sleeve notes Martin says: "Shepherd's Delight is a 3 part jig which I wrote as a physical and musical response to the exquisite mechanics of various fiddle tunes."At a workshop with Martin in the early 2000's he explained why he had written the tune which is also in his notes in the Mel Bay "Cool and Unusual" tab book: "Shepherd's Delight was written as a reaction to watching great fiddle players produce endless streams of notes with apparently no effort. It's interesting to notice how some players make their playing look strenuous, while others are very much the opposite. This is a three part jig. The A part is a balance between the right hand rolls, and the left hand hammers and pull-offs. The B part is largely played with the thumb and index finger, and the C part is just a joyous exercise in fluidity. Don't play it too fast."I'm sure ianlp59 will be along to comment shortly

I have a number of TAB versions of this all from the sources you mention, I have never compared them to see if they are identical. Let me investigate and I'll come back to you.
On what I have it looks like there is a sequence of hammer on / pull offs after the bend in the opening bar

On what I have it looks like there is a sequence of hammer on / pull offs after the bend in the opening bar J Guess what - there are no bends in the opening bar, in fact there are no bends at all in the whole piece in the Mel Bay version BUT there are bends and releases in "The Ramble to Cashiel" version - which isn't that clear in terms of hammer-on/pull-off notation. The second string sequence (Mel Bay) starting with the last note of bar 2 in terms of frets goes: 2 hammer-on to 3, pull-off to 2, pull-off to open, hammer-on to 2, pull-off to open. In "The Ramble to Cashiel" version it goes: 2 bend to 3, release to 2, pull-off to open, hammer-on to 2, pull-off to open. Hope this helps
