A grand evening out with Mrs O'C plus 'nuffsed and Mrs Nuffsed to see Ralphie for the umpteenth time. An unadvertised stunning opening support set from Ben and Jimmy - sort of English duo meets Americana - superb vocal harmonies (all through every word of every song) and stunning guitar playing. Unlike the vid above, they used a single condenser mike for everything, maintaining sound balance with the sort of choreography that bluegrass bands often use. Lovely to watch, and superbly done. The sound was so natural - just like real guitars with no suggestion of brittleness or overblown bass. The guitars interlocked really well, with the pair trading solos as well as harmony playing, each supporting the other perfectly. The voices blended well, and were so in sync on every syllable. Excellent - catch them if you can . Could have listened to them all night. Then Ralph. He looked tired all evening and totally knackered by the end. Guitar playing was a bit shaky at the very beginning (Nanna's Song ) but settled as things went on, albeit with some hastily corrected near-goofs and some fluffed fingerings here and there - unnoticed by Mrs O'C and Mrs Nuffsed. However, it mattered little - the magic of the songs and relaxed delivery worked their wonders and I just floated blissfully through his set of memory after memory. Highlights for me were Nanna's Song, England, First Song, Gypsy, After Rain and Ghost of Robert Johnson. He forgot the words of After Rain at one point, disguised it with an instrumental interlude and did some other bits in a different order - didn't spoil it one bit, and a relief to know that after over 50 years on the road it still happens to him from time to time. Something of a magical evening for me in spite of him seeming a little under par now and again. scorpiodog - will you be seeing him in Wimborne tomorrow? Ah, later today I mean! Keith

Hi,
Interesting review. We're seeing him in Sheffield on saturday. He's only just started a hectic tour so I don't know what he'll be like by the end of October!

Like wot Keith said...fab evening, love Ralphs songs/lyrics/stories, a real Legend! Just looked very tired and under par, but still a great time was had.
Ben and Jimmy were outstanding, and I would definitely go see them again, great vocals/harmonies/guitar skills, just wonderful to listen to and watch.

Sadly, Ralph's not heading much NW this tour - Buxton is the nearest and Ben and Jimmy won't be with him that night. I can highly recommend Ben and Jimmy 's albums - the live album really sums up their performance whilst The Nashville Sessions is full of studio sounding wonderfulness I wrote a song for (or, rather, about) Ben when he was a solo performer and his energy nearly took him off the stage

Saw Smith and Brewer at Cropredy. Very interesting but their set was a bit too long for them and by the end it all sounded much the same. I’d like to see them in a smaller gig - hopefully they will be with Ralph in Brum.

They only did about 1/2 hour - mostly up-tempo stuff but interspersed with a couple of slower ones here and there in just the right places. Well paced I thought. Yup, 23 Nov they are with Ralph in Birmingham Village Hall. Keith

In Cropredy they were clearly knocked out by 20,000 people. It was all high octane. There were no slow ones - which would have made all the difference!

Just seen the show at Sheffield. I think Keith must have seen a 'warm up nerves slot' as I thought Ralph was excellent. He did a 90 minute set on his own after Smith and Brewer did their 30 minutes. Ralph said this was his 4th date of the tour and he's got a lot of travelling still to do so hope he holds up. He said he was changing his set each gig 'to keep me on my toes' so there were a few of my favorites missing (Nana's Song, Barges, From Claire to Here) but it was good to hear some that I didn't really know. Particularly liked Grande Affaire and After Rain. And a few songs that I previously didn't like much (e.g. Peppers and Tomatoes) were quite moving when put into his explained context (in this case Kosovo).
His only real stumble was forgetting words in London Apprentice which he just had a good laugh about and started the verse again. Nice that we're all human. he even had the words on a music stand for a new one!! Hooray!!
I enjoyed Smith and Brewer, very talented and fabulous musicians. Even so I'd had enough after 30 minutes of them, partly in anticipation of Ralph, and also it became a but 'samey' even though the songs were different.
Only criticism, which annoys me when I should just let it go, is the announcement that 'we'll have a short break of 10 minutes' and the show restarts after 30. I've been to big 'arena' type shows where the act starts up to 50 minutes after the advertised time and it does get up my nose a bit.
But an excellent show all round; if you can still get a ticket snap it up; last night was full house.
