Are there any really low-budget-but-decent electric guitars that you would recommend for a newbie? I would be looking second-hand, but having a model to look out for would help. I'm thinking telecaster or Les Paul copy rather than a strat. Those Squier Classic Vibe guitars were supposed to be good but they are going for £250-300 used and that is way out of my league.

Yamaha Pacifica.....basic strat style model around 130 notes.
Sorry....misread your post stating you dont fancy a Strat.

The "Vintage" brand guitars seem to have a good reputation, I have no personal experience of them mind, though I've seen a couple recommended on the Telecaster FB group. Have a look on Youtube for "Vintage V52" or "Vintage V62".
Richards Guitars have a V62 (tele type) for £259, and V52 FOR £299. Main difference is rosewood vs maple fingerboard, though it's explained here:

Lynn, if you'd have told us earlier, I'd have braught my PRS SE to Halifax. I suppose you won't want to wait 10 months?

I've seen some of the Vintage guitars second hand for around £125 but even that's out of my price range at the moment. Maybe one will be going on gumtree for cheap. Lynn, if you'd have told us earlier, I'd have braught my PRS SE to Halifax. I suppose you won't want to wait 10 months? I just had a peak on google and those look really nice, but I am pretty sure it will be far beyond my budget...

Lynn if you can wait till HB10 you could win one of my CS336s for nothing, well you've just as much chance as anyone else. Not much help now I admit. Colin

Thomann have this www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_hbt16bk_egitarre.htm for around £70. But, I bought a Harley Bento electric mandolin from which I’m happy with now but needed to do some work on to get it to the stage it’s at. I replaced a pickup and had to set the neck as well as setting the intonation and action - which was easy with the way the bridge works.

I would highly recommend the Vintage V120 And the Cort Classic TC The Vintage is a vey nice copy of a Gibson Les Paul Junior and it's amazing the variety of tones you can get, with some volume and tone control tweaking. The Cort was designed by Manson.

A UK guitar forum I sometimes visit had quite a few members praising the low budget Shine guitars (Chase Direct was an outlet if memory serves).
A few are currently on flea-bay at under £100.
I do also recall a lot of those members were ones that were into DIY set ups and pick up upgrades though.
I have over the years owned a fair few Vintage brand electrics, and if properly set up they were mostly very good value for money. A Vintage V100 is often a good bet, though the more expensive V100 Lemon Drop (I still have one and love it) is better. Vintage usually have Trevor Wilkinson hardware and he seems very adept at getting the most out of a budget in terms of quality.

It looks like the V100 is typically £270+ new.
If the one you mentioned is in good condition and is set up OK the price seems very good to me. Less than 1/3rd of new price. But I've not been playing electrics much or buying any at all for the past 5 years! I may be out of touch.

There is a Vintage V100 (not lemon drop) for sale near me for £80, is that a good or average price? Looking at what's available on Gumtree at the minute £130-£170 would appear to be the going rate for a second hand one. You can definitely get a usable electric in the sub-£100 bracket, as long as you know what to look for and you're happy to do some basic work. Look for a name you trust (or try and avoid names you don't, I suppose), and be ready to do a truss rod tweak and a set up, a bit of light soldering and fit some new machine heads depending on the state it's in. Luckily most of that is easier on a solid body electric than on an acoustic guitar too. In the past I've owned a Yamaha Pacifica 112 (£30ish in a charity shop about 12 years ago) and a Dean Evo XM (£50 off a mate a few years later). Both were fine instruments for the money.

I put a set of Duncan 59's in this one and even though a bit heavy she's still a keeper. $225 on sale. Came in at just under $450 including case and replacement pick ups.

I can't talk about the really budget Vintage electrics as I haven't tried them, but I will say that they seem as competent with sparkers as they are with wooden instruments. A Vintage V58JDAB has become my go to even with access to a real Tele and a Squier. Not only does it produce serious Tele sounds, but it can do creditable impersonations of a Strat and "woman sounds" as well. A genuinely great guitar.
