Bought tickets some months ago for this gig because the memsahib likes Cara Dillon. I wasn’t too fussed myself; I had always considered her voice rather weak and somewhat reedy. I hadn’t paid any attention to Sam Lakeman, her husband and accompanist, either. Well ............. How wrong can you be. We were treated to a flawless and accomplished performance. Let me just say that the lassie can sing and then some. She had the audience in the palm of her hands. She sang some traditional Irish songs like the Banks of the Bann, a stunning rendition of Blackwater Side and left the audience with The Parting Glass. She also sang some of her own compositions with which I am not familiar but I intend to remedy that oversight soon. Now, yer man, Sam Lakeman is a truly gifted musician I spent more time watching him that Ms Dillon. Good pianist but an outstanding guitarist. All his guitar stuff was in dadgad so something of a mystery to me but absolutely captivating. He more than accompanies his wife, he seems to shape her singing with his playing. Both are skilled at forming a rapport with the audience. A really entertaining evening. Dont miss them if you get the opportunity to see them.
