Hi - I am new here. My name is Oli and I am a luthier based in London. I have made 10 or so guitars, so still plenty left to learn, but the process is getting easier and I make less mistakes these days I started this new build in October and have just closed the box. It will be a 12th fret model of a small OM shape I designed - based off a Larson Euphonon. It has a cedar top and african mahogany back and sides. Spanish Cedar neck, rosewood fretboard and bridge. First time building with cedar - the piece I am using sounds almost metallic. Expecting good things. Pics & more info below! Selecting the wood. I had a few different bits of cedar / hog to choose from and these bits looked best. Carved back braces. I have relived the centre of the brace to try and get the back moving a bit more. The bottom two bars won't be tucked into the linings. The top two will be. I have built the X brace thin and tall. It tapers in the lower bout but less so in the upper. Reasoning behind this is to keep the string energy bouncing around the lower bout, rather than leaking all over the place. I also like to make sure the area around the soundhole is kept stiff. Box closed. Once the sides are cleaned up I will bind the body in white plastic (same as soundhole binding). Mock up of the guitar with neck and bridge blank. Once I sort the neck joint and binding, all that's really left is neck shaping and clean up. Oh and making a bridge. Thanks for looking!

Hello, and welcome to the Forum Oli - great first post. You should find lots of luthier interest here, and many like-minded folk willing to share and swap ideas. Looking forward to seeing your build progress.

What a first post!
Looks great so far. Sure the instrument will be a cracker when it's completed.

I managed to get a bit done this weekend. The bolt on neck is roughly there, the bridge is roughly made, and the binding has been installed. Leaving it to dry overnight and then I will scrape and sand it flush. Test fitting the white plastic binding. I prefer using wood for binding but on some projects I think the plastic stuff can look good. And it is a piece of cake to install. Top and back now bound. Test fitting the neck, fretboard and bridge to see how this model will look as a 12th fretter. It's gona be comfy to play. A better look. Not settled on a bridge design yet but it's going to be a simple one. I should have this ready for finishing at the start of Dec, and then strings on before Christmas.

I have now started applying the tru oil finish to this one. I like tru oil and find it gives a decent finish for what is quite a hassle-free application, however in the long run I want my guitars to have a high gloss, much more protective finish. Fretboard sanded and radiused. This guitar has evo gold fretwire. Finished shaping the neck and headstock, and got a new lamp and storage board. Finish going onto the african mahogany back and spanish cedar neck. Closeup of the back, about halfway through the tru oil process. I do about 15 coats for the back (over 5 days), and buff back with 0000 steel wool every 3 coats. The first 3 coats are a little thicker to build up the finish, and the last 3 coats are a little thinner.

Hey all Put the strings on this one today. Sounds predictably warm for Cedar & Mahogany. Once the strings dull a bit should be even warmer. Nice tone, particularly clear up the fretboard. Once the wood has gotten used to the tension I will give it a proper setup & intonate the saddle etc. Have a good christmas and new year everyone! Will be back in 2019
