Congratulations James. Lovely to see a good award ceremony and even better to see a young fellow all dressed up for the occasion

Fantastic effort all round... well done James for winning and Dave for such a generous prize. It's wonderful to see such generosity intersect with great talent... and it will be wonderful to hear some clips once the handover takes place. If I may be so bold as to make a suggestion? ? How about the next competition be aimed at washed-up, middle-aged hacks with limited talent, poor technique, questionable taste and no chance of ever making it in the industry??? I'd be the first to submit an application.... Three cheers for James and Dave!

Hi Keith,
Thanks for the info on the H2. I think I've been placing it too close to the soundhole. Your explanation makes good sense. Just one quick clarification if I may.... I have the gain set on medium but often the volume is a bit low. Is that what the "record level" is used for; to increase the volume of your recording without getting clipping (which seems to happen if I set the gain level to high)?
Thanks again,
marcus

Hi Keith, Thanks for taking the time to create such a comprehensive review... it's wonderful to have your in-depth written reviews alongside illustrative videos and sound clips. Fine effort.. Can I ask a slightly off-topic question? Is there any particular technique you use to get a good quality recording using a Zoom H2? I've got one and sometimes it sounds great and at others seems to get all boomy... maybe it's to do with where the mic is positioned? Thanks again, Cheers, marcus

Well I have no experience but wonder whether it would make the guitar slightly more resistant to humidity shifts by preventing the interior of the guitar soaking up or giving off moisture? The fact that you are getting a couple of Tarans is something I have more definite thoughts on... you lucky old so and so!!! Should be a wonderful duo. Cheers, marcus

No one ever told me this was meant to be a comedy??? Another interesting fact I've learned from this thread.

Thanks for posting about this important research... thankfully I've just found another rationale for my aversion to practising and will rest easy in the knowledge that I both lack intelligence and ability and am in fact over the hill.

Well there you go... you learn something new every day. Thanks for the explanation Michael. Those other clips of Froggy Bottom guitars from your TNAG website sound great too... enjoy Italy. Cheers, marcus

Thanks Wild Violet and Phil for chiming in. Phil, I think I'll basically follow your set up using my Zoom H2 as the mic.
Leoroberts, best of luck with sorting out your recording needs.
Cheers, marcus

Hi Kym,
Thanks for your prompt and very informative reply. I should have specified that I just dabble in recording (mostly just to hear myself and try and improve or simply to share the tone of whatever guitar I'm playing... or selling!). The "movie maker" programme you mention may well be the one I had on my last computer (it sounds familiar). I'll download that and the Audacity programme too as it sounds like it has a few additional features that could be useful. The DAW programme sounds a bit beyond my needs at present but thanks for sharing that... hopefully some other forum members will find your write-up helpful.
Thanks again Kym, I really appreciate it.
Cheers, marcus

Hi All,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this question but here goes. I've got a newish computer with one of those built-in cameras in it. The last computer I had (which kind of died) had some kind of programme installed on which allowed me to video record a guitar once I plugged in an external camera/mic. I could even plug in a Zoom H2 to record the sound and the quality of the final sound was much improved. The new computer doesn't seem to have any such programme even though it's got the built in camera. Could anyone please recommend a free programme (hopefully one that's legal and safe) that can be downloaded from the internet so I could do this sort of thing.
Hope this makes sense.
All the best, marcus
