This isn't a tab or music or technique book, but it is fascinating. It's called Guitar Zero by Gary Marcus. Written by a psychologist who, having been told he could never learn music because he could not keep time decided on a year's sabbatical that he would attempt to learn to play the guitar. There are all sorts of insights into how the brain learns music, what every bit of the brain does, what muscle memory really is and suchlike. It's very readable and as part of his research he met all sorts of people (including Pat Metheny) and he includes their views. It's also a pretty well written book. And it's on sale at THe Works at the moment for £2.99. www.theworks.co.uk/p/music-books/guitar-zero---the-science-of-learning-to-be-musical/9781851689323I thoroughly recommend it.

In particular, what on earth is the soundhole rosette inlay work doing crawling over the end of the fingerboard as well?! Perspex fingerboard? Need to be bloomin crystal to require that kind of price. 7 grand for a factory built guitar! That Martin brand sure is worth something!

Mark, Well done you - I'm so proud and pleased for you. I guess that the whole forum feels exactly this way I reckon you're right, Bernd. I certainly do.

Mark, you go from strength to strength. I can remember a conversation not so long ago where you said something to the effect that you couldn't see yourself performing in public. Well here you are, not only doing just that, but with one of your heroes, and changing instruments in the middle of a set AND having just performed at a record label launch for which you may be recording a cd. My friend, you are an exceptionally good guitarist and you deserve all this. Well done, indeed.

Excellent version playing and singing. Also very interesting camera angles there. Enjoyed it a lot. Also looked up some of his other stuff. There are some good vids there.

Great songs.
All the songs I've heard from the project seem superb. Much more so than the Cecil Sharp project (for which I do have the cd). I like this one, too:
I often find Chris Wood's songs almost cinematic in their storytelling. This is one of those. The guitar playing and hypnotic quality of his voice almost takes you to the doldrums in a square rigger. Then he gets to the last 2 lines, and the point of the song is revealed. Wonderful songwriting.

Looking good, Ian. Must have been brilliant. I am sooo jealous! Didn't anybody video it?

Oh, dear. I was really looking forward to seeing him tomorrow. As has been said, a very gentle and kind man, with quite some humour and even more courage. I've met him a dozen times or so, and I really felt a great kinship with him. Condolences to his family.

Ooh! Where abouts on the AFG is your thread?? I can't find it either. I do like a good punch up! Actually, I don't, which is why I'd rather spend time on here than having to cope with the unpleasantness you describe. Mind you, on the predecessor forum, we had the odd spat or two! Glad it's quieter here under the calm, cool gaze of the most unobtrusive moderators on the internet! Glad you eventually got a guitar to practice on, Jonny.

Looks like you had a really interesting time, Jonny. How did you come to be invited to his workshop? I confess, I really love the look of those archtops, holey headstocks and all.

Yes, Phil, I do. A Spruce and Rosewood one. I didn't commission it, though. When I bought it a couple of years ago from Oasis in Ringwood, once it was put into my hands, there was no way it was going to stay in the shop. I absolutely love it. The guys at Brook make a wonderful instrument, and fantastic value for money. They're also really nice people. Will you have a pickup in yours? I bought mine without, but following a little gig at which I had to sit still and play, I took it down to Devon to have them fit a K&K Mini. If you're ever in danger of playing the guitar out, I would really recommend it. Natural sounding and well balanced. Just like the guitar only louder! I don't know how you can contain yourself for long enough have a guitar built. The wait would drive me batty!

Looks fantastic. That cutaway is really going to look distinctive. I like the idea of the soundport, too. You must be so excited!

To the mandolin players - i do fancy one in the near.future, prob before banjo? Is it a real bugger to get your head round though Depends what you want to play, but for simple strummage, it's possible to play lots of chords straight off by thinking about the mandolin fretboard as an upside down guitar (just the four bass strings, of course). Finger placement seems quite natural then. But I'm a crap mandolin player, as you'll find out when it's my turn for Dave White's travelling mando in a few weeks time. To answer your original question, I'd love to be able to play a piano, but I have enough problems with guitar.

Congrats on the new guitar, Phil. Aren't new guitar days great? Hope you'll remain ecstatic!
