The Orsino would do - but I’m only dreaming so why limit myself? 😀 Yes, not a lot of RB in the video - but rather too much of Ben Harper with his guitars in front of a radiator… Leo, I know of a Brook guitar that may soon be for sale and you would only have to wait…well no time at all really 😉

In around 1983 I swapped my Gibson ‘The Paul’ for an Ovation Balladeer at a shop in Bingley, West Yorkshire. It was ok but I do recall it slipping off my lap. Fortunately it got stolen when we were burgled in 1985 and was never recovered. I replaced it with a Takamine F360c which was a nice guitar. Sorry for posting something that’s not really anything to do with the original post….. Unfortunately I’ve owned a few guitars I should have kept…..

BUM ! I just wrote a LOOONG answer to Forest dweller, about how to choose a BC pick and was researching my facts -and lost it! Deep breath -start again ! Almost all picks have thickness measured in millimetres. BC measure in decimals of inches. As the BC market is usuall more experienced players the thinnest they offer is 1 m/m (40/1000" - eg "40"). They do 40 =1 m/m 50 1.25 m/m, 60 1.5m/m, 80 - 2m/m etc. They do various shapes - my first was my first large triangle - known internationally as 346 - BC call it TAD. 346/TAD shapes have definite advantages over 351/teardrop/ shapes : 1. they are easier to hold 2. there is more mass 3. the "points are more like 60 degrees that 351s - more acute 4. you get three points instead of one!!! You need to specify the speed bevel (which is a very important aspect) - as long ago implemented by Wegen, and since copied by Dunlop on their "Primetone" copies of Blue Chips. I play right handed and order RH speed bevel. BCs are made of a composite material by Dupont called Vespal designed for low/no maintenance, minimal wear/ self lubricating applications, thus ideal for picks as - they NEVER wear out. Hope that helps. Thanks for the info. The JP Guitars website for BC picks gives the thickness is mm as well.

Look forward to hearing your verdict, Phil. I've always been in the emperor's new clothes camp - but, from the responses, it sounds like they really might be the real deal. I use heavy picks (flat and thumb) and so long as they're the right shape I don't worry about make. Just glanced down and noticed I'm currently using one I bought from Sun Studios in Memphis. :-) I can't help thinking that if I don't try one I'll be forever wondering if I'm missing out on something.

Thanks for all the interesting and informative replies. I currently use Dunlop 500 1.2mm and 1.5mm most of the time which are very cheap but sound reasonable I think. I've also tried a Hawk pick and a Primetone but neither suit me well. I think I will start with a Blue Chip at some point in the next month or so and if that's not the bees knees then at least I know I've tried one and work my way down the list you all have provided. £40 + £2.25 postage here from JP Guitars. link

Love this.....
And now a Brucy bonus. The same piece played on a Brook guitar and the similarity in sound is remarkable. This is David Jones who is an excellent player. The guitar is a custom Brook Otter 12 fret slope shoulder dread.

Has anyone since the last thread on this in 2015 got any experience of using these? Do they really reduce pick noise/click/thud whatever you want to call it? Do they produce a sound as good as people say or is it hype/marketing?

I was in Forsyth’s on Friday morning. No sign of a sale although a few guitars were reduced. As far as “I remember when” goes, inflation since 1999 runs at 79%. VAT increased from 17.5% to 20% in 2011. Add all that to the price back then and you’re not very far away from the current street (discounted) price of a new 025. Retail shops, particularly on main shopping streets, like Deansgate, have faced massive financial issues and very tough competition online. Many music shops like Forsyth’s have gone out of business, often because the core business that sustained them, from schools, has virtually disappeared. Bank’s in York and Dean’s in Scarborough (where I bought 7 of the first 8 guitars I owned) come to mind. As for the comment about Martin guitars, on top of inflation you have to add the collapse in the value of the £ since Brexit. I lived in the USA 97-01, the exchange rate then was around $1.75, compared to $1.25 today. That’s a drop of around one third. Add that to inflation and it’s obvious why prices have risen. It’s not excessive profiteering, it’s business in the real world. At the recent Woodstock show I didn’t see a single guitar under $8,500 even from relatively new luthiers. Over here certain luthiers now have stratospheric prices. How many of the guitars they sell go to real guitar players instead of rich collectors is debatable. I have a lovely little Wee Lowden (WL25) that is a great guitar. In my opinion, the company competes well within the Collings/Santa Cruz market for price. If you haven’t played a Lowden in recent years, I think you might be surprised how they have expanded the range and sound. The Koa x34 range is outstandingly good. Summarise this as “Reality check required”. I was in there about 11.15ish last Friday morning Chris. Pity I didn't see you because we could have had a good look around together 🙂

From having seen GG close up on a few occasions (but a while ago) - including workshops at the Llyn Acoustic Guitar Festival - I remember him talking about using all 3 of his ‘free’ fingers to play. I wonder if his style has had to change for some reason… He uses a pick and his little finger only. I learned one of his called 'Loren' a few years ago now and that was difficult to play even with all my fingers! Phil

Forsythe's is a nice shop but usually quite expensive in terms of being the top end of street prices and from my experience give poor p/x figures. Not sure if they normally give discounts other than the sales they have from time to time. I popped in last week or so and the Lowdens looked gorgeous. The F23c is a good price.
