Hope you're all safe and well folks. Strange times. We've got off pretty lightly virus wise here in QLD, for now. Time will tell. Binding! You know for the last 30 years or so I’ve wrestled on a frequent basis with a bottle of titebond glue and roll of masking tape when binding guitars. Usually, more tape and glue ends up on me than the guitar, but this week I tried a different method. The “superglue” method. Wow. Wish I’d done it years ago. Thank you YouTube. First off, you seal up the soundboard with shellac to prevent any superglue staining it. Then use the Stewmac binding tape. It is the best stuff I ‘ve ever used for the job. Highly recommended. Strong, flexible, with just enough “give” to pull the binding into the routed groove. You tape the binding in place first (using a little titebond in the joins and mitres) then “wick” thin superglue in between the tape, the binding and the guitar body. The beauty is you don’t apply any glue until you’ve checked the fit is perfect. Then you apply the glue. Just a few seconds later, it is done. Ready to scrape. If you’re a maker – and you’ve never thought about trying this method, give it a try. Do it! I used the “Hot stuff” red superglue. No accelerator. The process was actually pleasant, and binding rarely is. And the results, well, just superb. Here is a Bubinga Model S-SS and a ziricote tenor guitar (T-SK) both with torrefied soundboards. The tenor has sitka, the 6 string, torrefied Adirondack spruce. Both gorgeous looking guitars. So you can teach a middle-aged dog the occasional new trick… Nigel www.nkforsterguitars.com/instruments/

Not been able to get into the workshop much this week as I've got some sort of mild virus thing. So I've spent far too much time messing about on my laptop. One good thing has come out of it though - I made a half hour compilation of old Youtube videos. Set up your speakers, stick the video on, pour yourself a glass of something nice and enjoy. I might do another one... www.nkforsterguitars.com

Was sorting out me laptop today and found a video I'd made in 2017 that I'd never posted on youtube. Well, it's canny good - I talk about the differences between my long and short scale tenor guitars, about the tunings and strings and a fair bit more. Here you go - Enjoy, Nigel www.nkforsterguitars.com

The cases that arrived were advertised as 395mm internally. They were if you took all the padding out. They were actually 383 with the padding in. Useless. Two things - ask them to double check the size of guitar that will fit in, second, ask what happens if its no good?
I can't give you any tips on ordering the CF case as they were useless when there was a problem.

Right, the cases arrived at the end of last week. They're nice cases. The fibreglass one was as Johhny Mosco said - a good case for going from the house to the car, and back again. On par with a Hiscox Pro. The downside was the size. I asked the lass in China for internal dimensions and what she told me was a mile off. So both cases were useless.
The Carbon Fibre case was great - same shape and design, much lighter and a bit more robust. Its by no means a Hoffee or a Karaura, but is was a very good case for the money. But too bloody small.
Dealing directly with the Chinese proved a PITA too in this case. They denied giving the wrong measurements and argued black was white. I went through the Alibaba refund process and eventually, they agreed to have me ship (at my expense) the cases to another Australian customer for a full refund. As it was Alibaba backed the Chinese factory - stating "A few mm out is not enough reason to grant a refund." Despite a few mm being more than enough for a guitar to not fit in the case.
Luckily I got the Chinese factory to agree to the refund before Alibaba made their decision.
In short - nice cases, but double check the internal dimensions before buying.

My Yulong Guo came with one. Chinese. Completely fine, giving adequate protection and light, for putting in the boot of a car, but I wouldn't fly with one. No competition for Hiscox as they actually are bomb-proof! Jonny I'd say that for the Hiscox Artist, but the only two smashes I've had were both in Hiscox Pro cases. The cases were fine, the guitars were smashed inside. Shipping from Oz, everything is going in its case, and then in a custom plywood box. I'm taking no chances. The two cases I'm getting in this new style are coming direct from China. Nigel www.nkforsterguitars.com

I've got one arriving this week - lots of companies are selling them, all around the same price. There is a carbon fibre version also - or rather a CF lookalike. I've one of each arriving. Anyway, I'll report back in a few days. Stay tuned! Nigel www.nkforsterguitars.com
