I don't think the price is "obscene" - compared to the price of 4 nights' full board accommodation at a posh hotel in Scotlandshire, plus 4 days tuition and concerts from world-class guitarists - but I'm not a big fan of TE so it doesn't appeal to me.
Having said that I'm now trying to think of guitarists (or any musician) from whom I might be prepared to pay this much for tuiton in a nice venue - not sure I can...

In 2012 I made a Terz/Parlour harp guitar which I named “Fimbrethil” - the Entwife from Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings”. The origin of the name is a little complex - my baritone guitar is named "Treebeard" for its deep rumbling voice and when I made a baritone harp guitar I named it "Fangorn" (an older name for Treebeard) so “Fimbrethil” was an obvious name choice for the smaller model. Keith ( ocarolan ) had “Fimbrethil” on loan for a while and suggested I made a Terz guitar without the harp arm which I did a year later. Its name needed to be connected to “Fimbrethil” in the same way that “Treebeard” and “Fangorn” are and "An Féa Caol" means "The Slender Beech" in Gaelic which is how Tolkien refers to the Entwife Fimbrethil. Just to reassure anyone unfamiliar with Dave's instruments, they are much easier to play than pronounce or spell.

Yes I'm up for taking part! I think 2 weeks has worked well in the past for each participant's custody.
In terms of a case you could look at the TKL parlour, model 7875 I think. My Brook Creedy was supplied in one of these, you're welcome to try it for size next time our paths cross.
Cheers

Indeed it was a fun weekend, glad you liked my Brook too Jonny (it's the Creedy model, a parlour even smaller than the Clyst I think). Unfortunately I didn't get any photos of Preston Reed or Martin Simpson who were headlining on the Saturday night, but did take some at the concert on Sunday afternoon. Here then are my entries for the Acoustic Soundboard Photographer Of The Year award: Brian Willoughby and Cathryn Craig, lovely songs perfectly sung by Cathryn with some nicely executed post-folk-rock acoustic guitar solos from Brian: Tim and Sandra, who I think run or ran the Birmingham Guitar Society and a Folk Club or possibly both, played a great arrangement of an Andy Cutting tune which is now on my to-learn list: Keith Newby, honed his craft - the A-Z of Rock delivered on solo acoustic guitar - in the pubs and clubs of Hull, very entertaining: Richard Knott, of this parish I believe, and a very, very clever craftsman of songs indeed: Ben Smith and Jimmy Brewer, Essex boys with a fine line in self-penned "Americana", really terrific listening: I can't end without a photo from my hotel, the reception of which was full of many weird and wonderful artefacts. I spent quite a while chatting to the receptionist who was keen to tell me all about most of the objects, all except for this one - in fact seemed to go to great lengths to avoid mentioning it at all:

Plumped for the Terz for similar reasons to Robbie.

Enjoyed these very much, I do listen to quite a bit of jazz and this stands up very well indeed against that.
Have you tried to analyse the chords you used? Can I advance a theory (untested - my ears aren't good enough to work out what you've played) that by randomly generating chords it's possible that you have inadvertently hit upon some with "stacked fourths", which (dredging up some factoid I read in a magazine or somewhere) have an "open" sound that sits well with free improv?

Usually get my Newtones from Eagle Music, no idea if they are cheaper than the others mentioned so far, but the service is always good. They will let you specify custom gauges too. It's on my to do list to visit their shop one day too, they often have some interesting mandolins.
Back on topic, the slightly fatter .056 E string is specifically for the purpose of killing banjos, which is a bit of a bluegrass obsession. It will still work for other styles of music.

Is this a guest room? The closet looks a bit tight to me. And the bed only useful if you have L-shaped guests.

Enjoyed the bit at 0.51, bit of Pete Townsend.
Obviously a much easier instrument to play than guitar though, with only three strings...

Good spot Phil - I think I saw Clive singing once at a gig at the (now sadly defunct) High Barn in Essex, that's near his home town so I assumed it was a request or otherwise for the amusement of some friends or relatives in the audience. He is a talented fellow!

Very excited to be going to see Sierra Hull at London's Bush Hall next Monday (26 June). Plenty of YouTube videos including lots from her "bluegrass mandolin child prodigy" days but I suspect this recent one probably gives a better idea what to expect (Old Dangerfield and a cover of Tears For Fears "Mad World"):

Newtone from Eagle Music for the De Faoite which has unusual gauges 10-15-20-30 but Eagle sell custom Newtone sets at a reasonable price.
D'Addario EJ74 11-15-26-40 (not the coated or "extended play" version) on an old Gibson. Haven't started experimenting with different strings for that yet, as others have said changing strings on the mando is not something one normally looks forward to! Glad this mando can handle what D'Addario call "medium" strings despite its age. I bought the D'Addarios off ebay.
