I'm in the process of sorting logistics for the Acoustic Lapslide Forum Road Trip that I hope to have up and running in February but it needs a guitar This will be my "Red Kite" model with 630mm scale length. The back, sides and peghead are some nicely figured Claro Walnut that I got nearly ten years ago from Shane Neifer in British Columbia and the top will be Lutz Spruce that I also got from Shane - this will be the first Spruce topped version I have made. Bindings, fingerboard and other appointments are Macassar Ebony and the tuners will be Gotoh with Ebony buttons. The Claro Walnut peghead was shaped using my bandsaw and belt sander - as colins would say you just cut away the bits that aren't peghead The Macassar Ebony headstock veneer has the nut edge sanded at an angle to match the headstock and then it’s glued on using fish glue: When dry it was sanded level and the tuner holes marked and drilled on the drill press using a 10mm drill: The peghead is then initially shaped - final shaping will be done when it is glued to the sides: The Claro Walnut sides are thicknessed and shaped: Then it’s into the Fox-Bender with the heating blanket one side at a time. The wood is given a very light spritzing of water, wrapped in brown paper and then put in the “sandwich” of slat, wood in paper, slat, blanket, slat When the temperature gets to 150°C the waist is cranked down about ¾ of the way down, the lower bout bent and then the waist tightened fully down. The upper bout will be bent by hand on the hot pipe: Here are the two sides in the mould after bending on the hot-pipe and trimming to size:

Brilliant - a new year De Faoite build thread. Lovely! Looking forward to seeing how this develops and hearing road trip recordings. HNY Mr White.

The same to you Dale. The Macassar Ebony end graft is glued onto the lime tail-block using hot hide glue: The sides together with two black/pear/black purfling strips are glued onto the tail-block using hot hide glue: The peghead is then glued to the sides using fish glue:

Next the sides are profiles to fit the back curvature and the hollow neck taper to the peghead. Two Lawson’s Cypress stiffeners are then glued to the sides at the top of the hollow neck using fish glue. These will also serve as liners to glue the top onto: The back Lawson’s Cypress reverse-kerfed linings are then glued in using fish glue:

Great progress Dave, one day I'll remember to put the end graft onto the end block before gluing on the sides, instead of having to mortice it in when the box is closed!

Thanks Dale. The stiffeners were notched for the European Spruce lateral braces which are then glued in: Next the linings are notched and the Lawson’s Cypress side braces glued in using hot hide glue: Here’s the completed rim-set:

The Claro Walnut back plates are initially thicknessed, jointed and glued using hot hide glue and the tent method: The European spruce X braces are profiled to a 10’ radius, notched and then glued on one at a time: Then the ladder braces are glued on: The Claro Walnut X brace cap is glued on using hot hide glue: The back braces are then carved and the back is “voiced”. The linings are notched to accept the brace ends and the back is glued to the rim-set using fish glue: The Claro Walnut back strips are glued in using hot hide glue:

Squeezeout is a very personal thing Colin Thanks Rob. The soundhole is going to be “bound” with Claro Walnut. Firstly a Claro Walnut soundhole patch is cut to shape and glued on using hot hide glue and a caul: Then a rosette channel is cut in the top down to the soundhole patch: The Claro Walnut rosette ring and black/ pear/ black outer purfling are test fitted and glued in using white pva glue: Next a step is routed in the inner edge of the rosette and then the soundhole is routed out. This gives the look of a totally bound soundhole and the fingerboard edge will finish at the beginning of the step to give a complete Claro Walnut ring around the inner edge of the soundhole: The top is then cut close to final shape:
