In October2020, I was suer that I was replete, with three dreads, a 000, tree 00s and a size 0, two 2 strings a National, Dobro, and my mandolin .... oh and three archtops. But in October, Ebay sent me an email saying that there was a Collings 002h for sale. I now have one more than I can comfortably store in my modest 3 bed house.

Can't move in our bedroom for instruments, its mad That's almost exactly what Mrs O'C keeps telling me, except that she deletes "...it's..." and substitutes "...you're...". Keith

I'm forever looking at new guitars, or indeed old guitars, and dreaming. So I don't think the desire stops. But space is a very real limiting factor, as is time to play the various guitars one already has. Plus, I do ask myself what is it that my existing guitars don't do for me that I need a new one to do? Occasionally there is a genuine answer for that question that could warrant a new guitar, but most of the time I think practice could achieve the desired aim, and would need to be done with a new guitar, anyway. Sorry to be boring.

Just recently i've been thinking about a 12 fretter. I looked at the 'silly moustache' video on youtube (plus other bits and pieces re 12 fretters). He makes a comparison between an Eastman and a Collings. The Collings, unsurprisingly, wins out but he does love Collings guitars anyway. That said the Eastman does appear to be excellent for the price. The only problem is that now, whenever I look at all the lovely guitars out there after a while I think is the neck going to be as good as the neck on the Fylde Ken Nicol I was lucky enough to acquire two years ago. So no matter the quality of Collings and Bown and all those fairly rare, elusive makes or the more available ones like Fylde, Lowden, Brook etc I still have that thought. I can't see me just taking a punt again without actually trying a guitar first. Having said that it wouldn't surprise me if I was to post something sometime soon saying i'd done exactly what I said I wouldn't do. John

At a bare minimum, you need a guitar for every tuning you play in.

Pete Townsend, in the February edition of Guitarist magazine, when asked if he still collects guitars: "I had guitar tech Alan Rogen in my life for so long. And whenever we finished a tour, he would always buy me a guitar, and of course he bought me and gave me some fantastic guitars. I've never been really that interested in owning a '57 Les Paul or anything. I picked up a few in my life and thought, what's the story here? Because what's important about guitars is that they need to be played and I think unfortunately, it's difficult to play them all properly. They need to be played to stay alive. Japanese guitars particularly the old Yamaha 12 strings, when you bought them from the store, they were terrible. Now they're really good. Sometimes people don't get it but the word has dried out so while none of us will seriously do this, we probably shouldn't buy or own more guitars than we can play."

Not really. I just got a carbon fibre Lava guitar for the campervan and now I'm thinking a nylon string would be nice for all these Frederick Noad lessons I'm going through. I've got a bit of an acoustic to electric numbers imbalance. (2 acoustics/5 electrics). I've got a bit hacked off with the merry go round that is leccie guitars/amps/effects pedals. I'm wanting to pare it down to 2 steel acoustics...1 leccie (that the missus bought me.... can't sell that!!) and a nice nylon/nylon hybrid guitar.

My collection would be
3 electrics 1 archtop 1 resonator 2 gypsy jazz guitars 4 flat top acoustics
which is probably 1 electric, 1 gypsy jazz guitar, and 2 acoustics beyond what is "necessary" (i.e. to cover gigs, although that's a bit disingenuous on account of there being few gigs these days).
