There’s an Ariel Single Malt appeared on Fleabae I was sooooo tempted, until I slapped myself firmly about the head and reminded myself that I don’t have £4750 in the guitar fund.
Ho Hum
A short-scale guitar might help with my knackered hands and dodgy shoulder though…….
After a further slap round the head, any short-scale-12-fret-on-a-budget suggestions?

Can't say I suffer from Guitar Acquisition Syndrome yet, but I certainly mild Instrument Acquisition Syndrome, three accordions, Vignoni34/96, Giustozzi 26/72 a knock about Delicia 26/48, two mandolins The Loar F style and an A style Kentucky. Do I need them all? Course I do...Would a slightly better guitar improve my learning....without doubt. A friend of mine who recently passed left at least 12 violins and a couple tucked away from his partners gaze.

I didn't explain that bit very well did I Dave. I should have said using a capo on the first fret of a 14 fretter makes for less of a stretch, roughly similar to a 12 fretter, the first fret being about the same width as the 13th and 14th frets combined. But doing that also shortens the scale length. So similar in one way but not identical. I'll get there in the end. Yes - but the different relative bridge position really does make a difference to the sound (in my experience). I don't know quite what it is, but it's there. To the extent that I have tried out multiple guitars in shops and at shows and, without having spotted that a guitar is a 12-fretter, I have immediately preferred it when playing it. I have three 12-fretters - and also one 13-fret guitar - and all of them are either OMs or parlours.

All solid wood 12-fretter for £255
I have the cheaper (laminate back and sides) version of the same model (about £150) and that is still a decent guitar. They didn't do the all-solid version when I bought it. Action's a bit high but that's my only complaint - the tone is nice and the neck comfortable.

I thought I had (nearly) enough Guitars, then last Saturday I got dragged along to Richard's Guitars and I fell in love! Especially with a 12 Fret GA Redleaf Dowina, with that rare thing in 12 fretters, a Cutaway--ooh. They have a range of wonderful instruments there from LAG/Tramontane, via Cort and Eastman up to Dowina and Furch, I almost wish I hadn't gone along when invited,-----Almost!

[/div] I've been thinking about this change of bridge position as it relates to the right hand, too. I've been really struggling to get my flat picking to sound as fluent as I want, and it struck me that my natural right arm position, when flat picking, is putting the pick quite close to the bridge, where physics would determine that the strings are a little tougher to pick. So I tried the same tune with my 12 fret gypsy jazzer and... Wow! Instant improvement in feel. Early days yet, but I may have hit upon something that could help my playing a lot. Maybe not, of course. Will try and post the song in question one of these days.
