On the back of the issues with my Taylor 816 Issue with a Taylor 816I bought a hygrometer and was surprised to find that the humidity in my room (and most of the house) was 63%, pretty much what Taylor said my guitar was so can anyone recommend a dehumidifier for me? My room is only 2.6M x 3.4M and I don't have a lot of room to spare. Thanks Craig

Rather than dehumidify the house (open plan) I keep my best guitars cased with Silica Gel all year round. It can get over 70% here in the Summer and stays in the 60's a lot of the time. The guitars remain around 45% +- 5%.
Cheap, easy to manage and effective...
BTW seems you got a good service from Taylor - very reasonable.

I keep the D’addario humidity packs in all guitar cases. My guitars live in their cases.

If you definitely want a dehumidifier son you can leave guitars out, MEACO are probably the most reliable. I have one of their large 20litre versions and it means I can get a large room 6m x 6m down from 63% to 53% pretty easily and maintain it too. They have some logic thing that means you can set a target and it turns itself on and off to maintain it. www.appliancesdirect.co.uk/p/meacodry-abc10lb/meaco-meacodryabc10lb-dehumidifierThis would probably do the job well and it’s pretty energy efficient. I use a Meaco too and it does a great job in lowering and maintaining humidity levels.

EBac dehumidifiers are very good. They are a pig to get in your case though.

So because my guitars are in a rack I ended up buying a room dehumidifier and It's now down to a reasonable level in here. Surprisingly all my guitars apart from the one that went back to Taylor are way out of tune, I'm guessing that's the wood moving back into shape.

What are people using as hygrometers. I can’t find my old school whirling hygrometer or its slide rule (I said it was old school!) I’ve got three modern digital ones which are all in agreement within a degree on temperature but as regards RH range from 49 to 62%. It seems sense to establish the correct RH before considering buying a dehumidifier

I’ve checked the calibration using the method described here www.liveabout.com/how-to-calibrate-a-hygrometer-719640

Lost the final phrase when I cleaned up the links.
When I calibrated them they were both within 0.1% which is close enough for me.

That seems useful I couldn’t think of a way to create a known humidity other than 100% ie a cloud of steam eg kettle

Last week I bought a Meaco ABC 10L. I was iffy about the size in what is a rather small room so I bought a secondhand one on ebay for £65 rather than take a chance on a new one for £135 (the cheapest i've seen new). It looks like new and so far works perfectly.
It is a bit big as I thought but I hide it behind the guitars and it maintains 50% no problem at all. Glad I did it because i've been prevaricating for a while.

I've got a Meaco, too. 12L. Keeping it at 50% is dead easy. Tank tends to take a week or so to fill. I don't bother with the 'air purification' feature. I like beans too much - it'd overheat
