Well after not too long a wait I've just received a wonderful Brook Torridge from the fellows in Exeter. It has a Sitka top, flamed Walnut back and sides, a burled Walnut headplate, Rosewood bindings I think, and Walnut rosette and inlay. I also opted for a pickguard and black tuner buttons. One peculiarity of this Torridge is that it has a 24.5" scale rather than the usual 24.75" scale... the slightly shorter scale should help with my tendinitis issues. I think the guitar turned out great. I asked Simon for something that could be a bit of an all-rounder as I mostly play fingerstyle at home but also strum out a fair bit when playing in church. I think the guitar really succeeds in meeting both those needs... I am delighted with the result. Thanks to Simon for all his advice and help in making the choices that go with building a guitar. Thanks also to Robbie and Phil for their assistance and support along the way (including a few sneaky shots when they visited the workshop). Here are a few photos and a couple of dodgy videos I made... sorry for the incompetent recordings; I really play and sound much much much better than I do in the clips (seriously... everyone says so... including my Mum) All the best Marcus

Beautiful looking and sounding guitar, Marcus.
What gauge strings are you using? There certainly doesn't seem to be a lack of low end with the short scale.
I'd be interested in knowing how complicated the shipping from the UK thing was, too, if you don't mind. It was fear of all the potential disasters that kept me looking locally.

Hi Kym, I'm using light gauge strings (12s to ) and will continue to use them. I think the guitar has excellent bass response. The shipping was no problem from my end. Simon at Brook just sent it with FedEx... but he did double-box the guitar. Funnily enough it took a very circuitous route to get here... England, France, China, Singapore then Australia. The guitar is almost better traveled than I am and it's only a few weeks old. I did have to pay a fair bit in import duties and shipping costs... but because the guitar is not being sold in England, Simon was able to subtract the VAT. So I think it only works out a bit more expensive than buying in England. All the best Marc

Hi Leo,
Yes indeed I'm very happy... the guitar truly is wonderful and so easy to play.
You know, some people say I'm not so tough... but I am no man's bunny!
December 25th? My birthday is in March... and I'm not waiting.
Cheers, Marcus

Congrats Marcus - patience rewarded! Lovely looking guitar - the wood choices work really well - that headstock veneer is superb! Your "long-wing" bridge looks so much nicer to my eyes than the short stubby one that Brook sometimes use, and the pickguard shape looks well on the guitar too. A very enticing looking package! And, more importantly it sounds good too! Enjoyed your videos - nicely played. Keith (PS Is there some kind of compression/limiting on the sound though? Maybe the H2 setting?)

Thanks Keith... the long wing bridge is apparently what Brook is using nowadays.
As to the H2... I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. I plugged it into my computer and used the programme "Movie Maker"... it's a bit frustrating as it doesn't capture the guitar at all well. Perhaps I should have come to that recording workshop at the Forum meeting.
Cheers, marcus

Beautiful guitar, marcus! Congratulations! It sounds lovely in your hands too. I'm also a big fan of that walnut headstock veneer Interesting that the 'old style' logo is on there - is that something you requested, or has the new style logo been shelved?

Hi Marcus,
That is an absolute beauty. Well played!
It looks and sounds wonderful - especially the Walnut. Were you able to specify the particular pieces of wood/your requirements?
Hope you'll both be very happy.
Alasdair.
