I am getting very excited about the imminent arrival of my new guitar. It is 2years overdue! Anyone who has commissioned a build from a top builder will at some point had a similar experience. this particular guitar is going to be very unusual....I asked for a 5 piece back...and 3 piece sides. The choice of tonewoods being pink ivory/ African Blackwood for the back and sides, and spruce for the top. ETA ...second week in February.....apparently. The builder is Rob Aylward who is based in Scotland....this is the 4th guitar I've ordered from him...can't wait.  |

Excellent! I'm with you. Currently awaiting two from Taran - a build which, so far, has gone without a hitch. Sorry you've had to wait an extra two years!
Roll on the second week in February! Be warned, the rest of the forum will demand pics. Not me though. Not at all.

Aaaah..there's nothing like talking to kindred spirits....people who love buying guitars. Alisdair I see from the short time I've been on the forum that you too like custom guitars...good man..I have quite a few too...we might even end up doing some kind of trade at some point in the future...you never know.  Keith...my wife tells me that I have no patience.....nice to year that you think she is wrong too....  |

Congratulations on your imminent new arrival! I can also confess that his name was new to me, but it's great learning more about guitar builders, particularly those within driving distance  Looking forward to seeing and hearing it when it's done  |

I'm really intrigued by this. I saw one of his guitars on ebay.
A Pink Ivory guitar! One of the rarest tonewoods around.
I'd not really heard of him too, but he seems to be very well respected in the Gypsy Jazz side of things and has a 2 year waiting list. The Gypsy Jazz players know their stuff, they are some of the best players around and know their stuff when it comes to quality guitars too!

Not a long drive from Aviemore... So, four guitars, why do you keep going back? I'm ashamed to admit I hadn't heard of him. Erm, I'm afraid I have to echo Clydeslide… I hadn't heard of him either! You obviously like his work - what draws you back? For myself, I went for two Tarans because I liked the body shape and the sound it made - felt it lent itself to me and my style of play - in all tunings. I've had a couple of other hand made guitars and while I love playing guitars by different makers, I have to temper that with a little caution and an appreciation of budgets! Still, we're a long time dead… I'm looking forward to the meeting in Halifax with mixed feelings - there will be lots of very lovely guitars there and... Alasdair. |

Rajan, the wait is part of the (frustrating) fun Given that you obviously have a relationship with Rob Aylward that goes back a few years, d'you fancy sounding him out on whether he'd be interested in doing a 'meet the luthier' interview? Looking forward to seeing your new instrument when it arrives (don't get too excited about the website - it's mostly "under construction") |

I'm a peaty sort of bloke - favourite would have to be Lagavulin - but if you haven't tried Edradour (Speyside), Ardbeg (Islay) or Glendronnach (Aberdeenshire - go figure…) you might, just might, be in for a treat. |

I remember a Guitarist mag many years ago (mid 1990s?) having a very favourable review of a Rob Aylward acoustic guitar - haven't heard of him at all since then...until now! I think we need to know about your other Aylwards as well as this coming one Rajan! Keith |
