Was that set of Ziricote bought from Aaron Hix?
Very beautiful, I love Ziricote guitars.

Nice eh, Martin ? It's a lovely foundation .
earwighoney;
I don't know, 'wig. Avalon spent quite a while locating this set for me. I'm a visual artist in my other life and I wanted something which resonated with me visually. I'll ask about it as I'm also interested in where it was grown. They will know, I'm sure.

Bang on, 'wig, that's his writing without a doubt.I've asked Aaron Hix where it was grown. Avalon told me that they were exploring a new North American supplier.
So then, my set stopped over in Murray County, Georgia. Nice. Maybe it picked up some twang.

A lot of people seem to rate Aaron Hix's sets really highly, so I'm sure Avalon have chose wisely! Have you had a look at his website, there are some amazing pictures of other sets, there's one of Bocote which looks stunning!

Fabulous stuff ! That bocote set is awesome- but not my mood. of course. I spent a while looking at the Wood Database before deciding upon ziricote and bocote appears to have many similar characteristics- although not visual, obviously ! That's a molten honey set. That Bocote set is beautiful, but I'd be seriously worried about stability of such a set!
I've played a few Ziricote guitars and it's one of my favourite tonewoods in terms of sound - in particular a Ziricote Beneateau OM I liked so much I almost cried when I left the guitar shop without it. Never tried a Bocote guitar though.
Good choice on the Ziricote for your Avalon though!

No, I've not tried either. I'm very much steeped in rosewood/spruce and I can't begin to imagine what ziricote/cedar is going to offer. Then there's the design factor, my Alhambra being in the purely Spanish tradition- except for the cutaway. I believe that the Avalon top bout bevel will be the best of both worlds.

Aaron Hix got back to me and said that my ziricote set is Mexican. Will that information have any effect upon the guitar's output ? Yep.
Does anybody have any opinion as to whether darker or lighter-coloured cedar tops are preferable ?

I think most Ziricote comes from Mexico, so I'm sure your set will be good.
No idea about the Cedar - whether a difference in colour has an impact on tone.

I'd have preferred Cuban- from a political perspective- but Mexican is just fine.
An interesting commercial doco which kept me engaged throughout due to its full-length accompanying audio track;
What a good way to promote your stuff !

No idea about the Cedar - whether a difference in colour has an impact on tone. Doesn't dark colured cedar have a "dark" tone and light colured cedar a"light" tone I recently completed a commission using a piece of Western Red Cedar supplied by a friend in British Columbia, Canada. It was so light in colour that it could have been confused with a piece of dark Sitka Spruce. It was light in weight, incredibly stiff and had a fabulous musical resonance. When it comes to it wood is wood in all its infinite varieties.
