Following on from the 'next purchase' thread, is anyone considering downsizing their instrument collection anytime soon? I've thought numerous times recently that I just don't play the stuff I've got, and I should really make room and sell some of it off. Up for consideration are: - Bass guitar & amp
- Classical guitar
- a banjo
- Accordion
I've regretted selling some stuff in the past (The Single Malt Fylde mandolin is a particular regret), but I need more space and just don't play that much these days.

I never sell anything now, as I've missed everything I let go in my last night of the long knives. I have found that when I've returned to instruments I've mentally tagged as redundant after an interval I've approached them with fresh ears and started to enjoy them again. There have also been moments when I've been recording when I've thought, "Wait, I know which instrument would work better on this..."

And having heard several of your recordings over the years, as far as I'm concerned, you always make the right decisions on what to record with. I wouldn't mind being as good as you on one instrument, let alone all the ones you play. I guess it's called "musicianship". I think they'd run out of that in the shop where I tried to buy some. (sigh)

Don't do it!
There are other ways to create space by getting rid of inessentials, eg the kitchen (a kettle, microwave and ''phone for takeaways are more than enough), children (purely overheads), wardrobes (your wife will surely be able to cope, as you will, with a couple of pairs of dungarees), washine machine (there must be stream and some rocks nearby)...,
Of course, I would practice what I preach but my domestic line manager won't let me.

For financial reasons, we are considering parting with everything except one low budget guitar and my Solo amp/mics. This includes several acoustic guitars, a couple of my husband's electric guitars, an amp, an electro-acoustic mandolin, umm... other things too. I can't remember what they are, but if they can't move on their own volition, they're going to get sold.

(sigh) Thanks Paul. A huge compliment from someone who's selling their own musicianship far too short - and one that would doubtless be revised if you'd heard me playing at the weekend.

I've sold the Guild, which leaves me with one steel string guitar - the Seagull Maritime Folk. Not sure if I'll ever get round to playing it but I'll hang onto it for a while and see.
I love getting rid of things. Can't be doing with clutter. Having more than three guitars makes me feel confused.

No downsizing here I'm afraid. Glad there's some others saying that too so I can feel less guilty! My new interest in acoustic instruments in the last 5 months has put paid to downsizing in a big way, and I'm not sure if I've permanently given up on the electrics yet and I've kept them, so it's getting crowded! Acoustics : 2 Tanglewood Guitars (one parlour, one super-folk size), 1 Resonator, 1 Mandolin, 1 Octave Mandolin. Soon to be joined by 3 more instruments, two of them joint purchases with Mrs VikingBlues. Electrics : 1 solid body Vintage brand humbucker, 1 semi-acoustic Hagstrom humbuckers, 1 PRS SE P90 solid body, 1 single coil self build Strat, 1 Hofner violin bass guitar, 3 Fender amplifiers, numerous pedals. Oh dear! But at least I kept to a maximum of 4 guitars plus a bass and sold a lot over the last few years to get better ones. So I do manage to sell if needed. Reluctant to sell the Vintage as it's the best electric I've ever had (including Gibson SG Standard & MIJ Tokai LP Custom), and how can I offload the Hagstrom Viking Deluxe which gave me my VikingBlues on line name, and then the self build Strat had so many hours of my effort to make it that it feels like a part of me. Have to keep the bass for multitracks with the acoustic instruments ... unless I get an acoustic bass ( NO Mark ) Mrs VikingBlues's collection of Ukes (Tenors and Baritones) plus a Tenor Guitar means we're in danger running out of space here - just as well it's an old style (drafty) house with larger room sizes. Got to say that, for myself, having guitars that you don't play regularly is like having paintings and keeping them facing the wall. Someone else may enjoy them. I came to this conclusion last year and sold lots to fund a couple of Tarans.
I have the Tarans and a Goodall presently - a Taylor, a Fylde and a 335 are on the way out this year. Juut don't play 'em.
Horses for courses...

I'm with alig (as usual)... I actually get a bit flummoxed when I have too many choices and so like to keep the numbers down. I currently own two guitars and one amp. I'm selling one of the guitars and may eventually buy another. But two is enough for me at any time. I've bought and sold quite a few guitars over the last few years. I don't mind either process although the selling is a lot more hard work... still I really like the feedback when someone buys a guitar from you and is happy with it. I don't really regret selling anything; any feelings of disappointment are usually related to how much I've 'lost" in the buying and selling process

Yeah, I'm planning to sell the following items but I'm struggling to gather the motivation to do so
- Yamaha acoustic guitar - Flamenco guitar - 2 electric guitars - Fender amp - 3 microphones - some guitar pedals

Mark My advice is don't get rid of them even if you think you've given up on them. Keep a favourite at least. Long ago I gave up my job as a pro musician and sold my workhorse Telecaster and most of my other instruments in a moment that was was like slamming the door on the person I'd been. When I returned to playing after the hiatus I stayed acoustic for the first few years and thought I was happy that way. Then I met up with one of my old bandmates again, he gave me access to his Hohner and Washburn electrics - and I actually got a bit emotional, so overwhelming was the sense of coming home. I suddenly remembered how different playing an electric actually is to playing acoustic, and just what I could do on one. Now the Washburn is on what seems to be a sort of permanent loan to me - but I still remember the feel and the particular sound of that trail worn old Telecaster, and I'd love to have it back.
