And it progresses.... Em9 0x355x alternating to 5x355x Dmaj9 x3240x alternating to 3x240x The base note alternates in both chords so you don't hold down 5th and 6th strings at the same time, just alternate between them. I haven't yet mastered the muting business - will have to work on it https%3A//soundcloud.com/creamburmese/itza-2Can I suggest an alternative... Em9 - X75777 (X7577X) alternating to 7X5777 or 7X577X. Dmaj9 - X5465X alternating to 5X645X. Had a wee stint playing with a jazz chum and, personally, found I liked the voicings and ease of playing these chords. Also, the Dmaj9 is one of these moveable shapes and I just love 'em! Alasdair.

I'll try those alternatives when I get home - if they are easier to play I'm all for it! Julie

I'm 'used' to them... As I said, I have distant memories of playing with a jazz friend and these are the shapes I automatically turn to when I see them. You can also try a wee walk-down bass on the fifth string between the chords - 7-6-5. One of my favourite 'alternative' (moveable shape) chords is Em7(b5) - x7878x. I often use that instead of Em or m7... Dm7(b5) - x5656x, etc, etc. Come to think of it, I also often use Am9 (5x55oo) instead of Am and Bm9 (7x77oo) instead of Bm. Just different voicings. Good luck!
Alasdair.

Alasdair, your in put here is highly appreciated !
A walk-down bass is something I have been trying to get into chord progressions for quite a while now. I'll try it this weekend!

Good stuff, Bernd. That was quick!
Can I point out that the bass note in the last chord ought to be on the fifth fret...
Hope this is of some good.
Alasdair.

Thanks for doublechecking, Alasdair. Just in time to alter the chord.

Ah - well having had time to check this out I realize that Alasdair is posting the official sanctioned chords that all good guitarists should use. As I don't fall into that category, and I couldn't get to the entire chord fast enough, I just tried to fret the strings that were needed. OK so call me a wimp... just want my hands to avoid dropping off long enough to learn to play this b****y classical guitar! Eventually maybe I might get my short stubby fingers around those chords in the same measure I'm supposed to play them, but it isn't happening right now, and necessity is the mother of invention and all that. ps I also modify my classical pieces if I think they sound better another way .... recently I (gasp) changed a bunch of B naturals to Bb cos it sounded moodier, and I haven't been struck by lighting yet!

Yeah but classical guitarists have this strange idea that they have to play EXACTLY what is on the sheet music. If I have to change something (either because of incompetence or because I prefer the sound) and my teacher finds out (i.e. listens), he actually annotates the score - even though by that time I probably haven't actually looked at the score in weeks because learning the notes for me only takes a fraction of the time it takes for me to learn to actually play it :-o BTW this week I've been making a determined effort to "finish" some of the pieces I've been working on. I like Alison's idea of actually recording them as a means of giving yourself permission to move on.... hence Bossa Nova is not moving forward as it should. Julie
