Time to get this started.
The idea is to do a kind of online workshop for Bossa Nova.
I'd like to start this thread with a few youtube clips to give you an idea what kind of music we're talking about.
Here are some clips of all-time-favourites:
Desafinado
Blue Bossa
Corcovado
Girl from Ipanema
Morena Boca De Ouro

A chum and I used to do what he called 'pizza gigs' in a couple of restaurants on Glasgow many years ago. He was a superb guitarist, although he considered himself a better bass player...) from whom I learned a great deal. We played all of the above - apart from no5 - and lots of standards, cos Stevie, for t'was his name, was a jazzer, loved the stuff and I did as I was told... Very much the junior partner.
I still find my way to Blue Bossa when I wandering around the fretboard and I'm always glad that I remember it (mostly).
More barring than I'm used to these days tho....
Thanks for posting, Bernd. Think I'm gonna enjoy this.
Alasdair.
PS On thinking about it... I think we also did a tune called 'Wave' (?) and 'One note Samba" which was a lot of fun, and not too challenging. That said, it was a long time ago and my memory's not what it was...
Guess what I'll be noodling about with on nightshift tonight...!

My idea was to first build up rhythm and therefore concentrate on accompaniment first. However, for a starter and to get anybody who's interested to join here, it might make sense to start with a fingerstyle tune. I chose Bossa Nova Breeze, because it's not too a big challenge and I've got the tabs for it Bossa Nova Breeze pdfFor this tune there are several clips on yooutube. Here's one. In my humble opinon the playing is fine, but the rhythm is missing. Also, this is too fast. A Bossa has more expression: I prefer this one. for me it's much closer to what I think it should sound like. This is also nice, but still not what I'm looking for. This is not the tune, but the rhythm: So this is the starter. Next time, I'll start with some easy chords and a simple but interesting chord progression.

This is an interesting thread Bernd - could be a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to seeing what develops. I can hear how it's all very much in the rhythm and those video clips you've chosen demonstrate that very well. Useful to have those PDF Tabs to play around with - I notice like the way blues is tabbed, it doesn't show the precise rhythm. But it doesn't need to do that - if anything it would make it much more difficult to read / follow. Mark

I guess a lot of the rhythm depends on how you accentuate your playing, Mark. Muting the strings at the right moment is half of the deal, I guess.
Thanks for your kind comment. I hope I can come up with something worth following :-)

While practising today I noticed that a metronome can be quite boring and decided to look for something more interesting. In case you have a "smartphone" (which you probably have) you might be interested in making use of it as a drum machine. Here's an app you might want to replace your metronome with. Android users, please look for Drum Machine by zaoloapps in Google Play. There's a free version and an add-free version for appx 3 GBP. If you've got a windfall fruit device, please check itunes for an appropriate app. Sorry, I can't help here

Now here are the chords I start working with: See this post belowFirst I'm going to concentrate on Em and Asus2. It's a change between thumb on the E string and then index(i), middle(m) and ring(a) at the same time.

In order to get a more jazzy sound I change the chord set from Em / Asus2 to Em9 / A7 And now it sounds like this https%3A//soundcloud.com/berndsch/bntrack002

Let's add three more chords to geet a nice chord pattern: The pattern is played with these chords in following order Em9 A7 Cmaj7 Am7 D7sus4 And it sounds like this: https%3A//soundcloud.com/berndsch/bntrack003The chords are already quite nice, but what I'm still missing is the rhythm. A good way to get there is to mute the strings in order to stop the first chord from ringing too long. Like this: same chords, but the first chord is muted. https%3A//soundcloud.com/berndsch/bntrack004
