Have to add a +1 to the www.michaelmesser.co.uk forum and also a big +1 to www.buskerguitars.co.ukI have an MM Blues which I have had for ages, and is a superb guitar, and not only well made, but also very close in specs to an old National. Plus Busker customer service is great IMO My MM Blues

I'm also thinking about a square neck at the moment - not sure why but I really have a hankering to play lap steel...
I was thinking of going for the gretsch boxcar, which seems reasonably well made for not a lot of money...

If I remember correctly the Busker was priced at £385 (?) but the Republic probably cost a fair bit more on the doorstep in the UK, (I'd offer a little less, Sshhh)!!
Edit, I've just discovered they were about $400 in the States.

My step-daughter is thinking of getting a resonator guitar, mainly for country and maybe some blues.
She mentioned that she'd seen one for about £500, but she's not used one before and she could do without paying that much if she really doesn't need to. I wondered if any of you had had much experience with these before? Is there anything she should be aware of? Are there any that stand out amongst the crowd say around the £250-£350 mark?
Any advice most appreciated.
Thanks,
Calv.

If I was looking to buy a resonator now I would go for the Gretsch G9200 Boxcar, Why?
It has a spider bridge ala Doboro and it's wood.
It looks very sweet and is a great price c £299.
I've read very promising things from players.
I have a biscuit bridge wood body "National type" that I built myself so that's why I'd choose a spider bridge.
I think the first thing that people think about when they first pick up a metal body reso is the weight so bare that in mind.

The two resonator advice threads have been merged here So that's why I lost my post. Here are the essential points: In price bracket Pac Rim jobs all seem to use same resonator so pretty much all sound the same. Go for comfort and looks. Keith's recommendation of Gretsch very good in both respects, also look at round neck Hound Dog dobro. I have square neck Hound Dog and very happy with it.

My apologies for losing your post Pete - I wasn't aware that had happened, but it seemed redundant to have two essentially identical threads running on such a wee forum. The Gretsch looks great (love that headstock) and the price is right. Most importantly, my local store stocks them
