Then the sides of the bridge are shaped and the bone saddle is fitted. Here's the bridge placed on the top. Next the pores in the English Walnut back and sides are filled using egg white. Small pieces of 240 grit sandpaper are dipped in egg white and rubbed on the body creating a slurry of English Walnut and egg white that is pushed into the pores - the albumin in the egg white acts as a binder. This process is repeated until the pores are filled. When dry the body is sanded with 320 grit paper.

Let us spray. Front . . . . . . and back. The neck is sprayed too.

Not long at all - it should be completed sometime next week, and although I've no further photo updates atm, I'm assured it's just in the 'fettling' stage (ok, I made that up, but that's what I took from what Dave told me ). To anyone who may be considering commissioning a build from Dave White (and there are quite a few members who've done just that), I say don't hesitate, and that's before I receive CBM! The expertise, communication and consideration I've experienced from Dave have been wonderful, and I'm filled with all sorts of confidence. I've even been offered the opportunity of getting another instrument built if I don't quite like the neck or the tonewoods! I've only commissioned three instruments in total: a mandolin from Jimmy Moon, a guitar from Rory Dowling (Taran Guitars) and now this octave mandolin from Dave, and I have to say that each and every experience has been tremendous.

Setup involves fitting the tuners to the neck, shaping the nut, fitting the tailpiece and the neck strap button. The strings are fitted with slots cut in the nut and saddle and the action tweaked and set up. Here's a recording of a little Polka played on CBM in GDAD tuning. Back view. End view.
